The Best Children's Picture Books Are the Caldecott Medal Winners

The Caldecott Medal is given out by the Association of Library Service to Children for the best illustrated children's picture book every year in January.

The Caldecott award is given to the illustrator of the book and has been awarded every year since 1938 and it is highly coveted by the illustrators of children's picture books. All Caldecott Medal winning books have the gold seal (seen here) on the front cover of the book.

Having read every Caldecott Medal winning book there is, I can attest to the fact that the stories are just as fantastic as the illustrations.

I have compiled a list of all the Caldecott Medal winning children's picture books here.

Start collecting these prize-winning books for your child's library today!

To collect each of these books would be a great adventure for your children or grandchildren.

Homeschool families can read each of these books as a unit study in children's literature AND watch the evolving American culture over the past 90 years. They would also be a great art study for your students to research the methods used in the illustrations of these books.

1938 Animals of the Bible

Dorothy P. Lathrop, illustrator

The first winner of the Caldecott Medal is Dorothy P. Lathrop for her illustrations in this book. The illustrations are pen and ink drawings and may not hold a 21st Century child's attention, but they are superb illustrations.

This book is a Bible book that is written in King James English. Study it as a cultural indicator of the time in which it was written. We've come a long way, baby!

Many Moons

Amazon Price: $16.08 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

A simple but mildly engaging tale of a King who attempts to bring the moon to his sick-at-heart young daughter, the princess. The moral seems to be that smart people only tend to see the big, obvious approaches to life, whereas commoners (here it's the court jester) can better grasp the subtleties associated with outlandish wishes and have the ability to make them come true without getting mired in all the "science" of the matter.

Thrilled by the story, Juan makes his own small garden in the hope that at least one family of swallows will nest there when they return.

Frog Went a Courtin

Frog Went A-Courtin'

Amazon Price: $2.98 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

Frog Went A-Courtin', is a story of a fantasy genre which was written in Scotland over 400 years ago, where it was told and sung to the children. As people began to move from Scotland to America they brought the "Frog and Mouse" song with them. John Langstaff explained this in the front of the book. Today, it is mainly read aloud, but the great illustrations, done by Feodor Rojankovsky, give great detail with a broad range of color use.

This is one of the great childrens' books of the 20th century. it combines a wonderful story line with great simplicity. It has the great merit of being a story which parents (or others) can read to children (mainly boys I think) without taking up a great deal of time and in which the children can participate to the full. Children very quickly memorize the words and love to take part in the reading which helps in learning reading skills as well as the love of books.

Duffy and the Devil

Duffy and the Devil (Sunburst Book)

Amazon Price: $3.17 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

This tells a cute story similar to the traditional version of Rumplestiltskin that is familiar to many of us. The watercolor illustrations are the perfect companion to this text as they are subtle with their opaqueness, yet still tell so much by themselves. Because the book deals with the devil and also some witches, it may not be appropriate for all audiences. Due to the difficulty of the, at times, archaic grammar and length of the text, students shouldn't be expected to read this independently until the 3rd grade, but can have it read to them at a younger age.

The Polar Express

I have never been more enamored of an illustrator and author than I have been with Chris Van Allsburg. When I first found Jumanji, I bought it because of the illustrations. The story was a bit dark and frightening for my young children at the time, but I pulled it out often to admire the art work.

Tuesday by David Wiesner

Tuesday

Amazon Price: $3.22 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

"Tuesday evening, around eight"--a deceptively mundane beginning for what proves to be a thrilling, miraculous, and surreal amphibian journey. Slowly and quietly on this particular Tuesday, a few fat frogs begin hovering over a swamp, riding lily pads like magic carpets. Clearly satisfied and comfortable, the floating frogs are as serene as little green buddhas. Gradually, the flying fleet grows in momentum and number, sailing over the countryside and into an unsuspecting town. These frogs know how to have fun--startling the occasional bird, waving webbed feet at late-night snack-eaters, and even changing the channels on a sleeping granny's television. As day breaks, the frogs lose their lily pads, head back to the pond, and wait impatiently for their next scheduled departure.

Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky

Zelinsky's Italian Renaissance-styled illustrations are characterized by warm golden tones and the mesmerizing sensation of trompe l'oeuil. Not only does he have the touch of a world-class illustrator, Zelinsky has also proven himself a master storyteller. We are frightened when the sorceress demands to take the baby Rapunzel, we are alarmed when the flowing locks are cruelly shorn, and we rejoice when the prince and his now modest-haired love are reunited. The notes at the back of Rapunzel reveal his careful scholarship regarding the long history of the story (tracing its origins and transformations from Italy to France and finally to Germany and the Grimm brothers)--work that no doubt contributed to his clean, compelling version of the age-old tale.

The Lion & The Mouse

In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney's wordless adaptation of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he'd planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher's trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.

Wonderful list - thank you for gathering it with images! One hiccup - each title is followed with "by so-and-so" - the author. You don't mention who the illustrator is (unless it is written and illustrated by the same person). Considering the Caldecott is for illustration, this should probably be remedied.

Being an avid reader, and mom to many offspring, I am familiar with a lot of these books. Some of our favorites never received the Caldecott Medal, but they have a place of honor with us! Congratulations on your well-earned LotD!

Great job on this lens, it's definitely deserving of a Lens of the Day award. Also very nostalgic, a couple of these books were favorites of mine when I was a kid. "Where the Wild Things Are" in particular.
