Custom Stone & Waterscapes - Calgary Landscape Design

Custom Stone & Waterscapes has been involved with Calgary Landscape Design for many years. Paul Gettis, the owner of the company, was born in Calgary and goes over a few design tips. Topics discussed include ideas on scope of projects in Calgary that would require a Landscape Design. Next, Paul talks about different styles of landscape designs that are popular in the Calgary area. Finally, the discussion turns to the actual design process and how to go about implementing your newly crafted work of art.

Calgary Landscape Design

calgary landscape designSo you are planning your new Calgary backyard and trying to decide if you need a landscape design or not. There are many scopes of Landscaping projects out there. Some Calgary folks may want to design just a patio for their new Calgary Landscape and others may want an entirely new backyard landscape.

The next question naturally becomes should I hire a Calgary Landscape Designer, or do the design yourself?

Calgary Landscape Design, done properly is art, plain and simple. This is an interesting concept because art is abstract, not everyone thinks this way. For some reason, some things just look good, while not the same can be said for others. It is hard to put into words really, but it is very true. One line drawn the wrong way can take an entire landscape design and make it look not quite right.

The problem with this is that on paper, you can make a mistake erase and then redraw. When designing a Calgary landscape project, it is not so easy. In fact the old expression 'it is written in stone' holds a lot more weight as once you start building stone patios the wrong way, its a super big deal to just 'erase' something.

So, my recommendation is to get a landscape design for pretty much any scope of project in your Calgary yard. What you have to decide is if you can do it yourself or if you need to hire a pro.

Some question to see if you are designed to be a Calgary Landscape Designer.....

1) Can you draw?

This is super important. Every professional landscape designer in Calgary will come up with a scale drawing. It is important to see the shape of your yard BEFORE you start to build. Think of the drawing in stone analogy. Not only do you want to see the shape of your newly designed landscape, you need it scaled so that you make sure your proportions are correct. Nothing is worse than building a patio two feet short of which a table could fit.

There are many software programs to help out with landscape design of your Calgary yard. Some are getting really technologically advance and can be learned fairly quickly. Something to think about.

2) What is your plant knowledge?

Plants take a long time to grow and mature. Especially trees. In so many mature neighborhoods in Calgary you see amazing trees have to be cut down because of spacing considerations. A Calgary landscape plans and design with a professional landscape expert would solve this problem that usually takes about 25 years to take effect. That is a big time investment to lose.

Plants need to harmonize with the natural surrounding landscape. Design plants that are native to the Calgary area will not only help survival rate but also radiate with the existing environment.

Planning your Calgary home out carefully with a landscape design will not only save you money in the end, but will allow for a more thought out transition from house to backyard, making the perfect space for you and your family to enjoy for years to come.

Good luck with your endeavours,

Paul Gettis
