Baked Bean/Ham and Bean taste Sensation

Calico Beans made with my recipe, is hearty enough for a meal.  It includes plenty of meat, beans, and great tasting ingredients.  This is a Crock Pot recipe, but you need a little prep work first.  This is similar to a "Ham and Beans" and "Baked Beans" mixture that will tantalize your taste buds!

My family absolutely loves it when I make Calico Beans.  It is great to make any time of the year, because you are using the Crock Pot.  By dinner time, your meal is ready, and trust me, your family will be waiting!  Try serving this with some Corn bread for an extra treat.

Since I learned to cook by my Grandmother, I am basically a "pinch of this", "dash of that" type of cook, but I try to estimate as best I can.  I've given the recipe to many people and have not heard any complaints! Even better, that means it is safe to adjust the recipe to your taste, and budget.  I like to use mostly canned beans, but I also use fresh Pinto beans.  You can make this either way and it will be fine. These are also sometimes called Cowboy Beans

Gather your Calico Bean Ingredients

Best Cowboy beans ever!

Here is what you will need
  • 1 lb hamburger cooked and drained
    1 Ham Hock
    1 Chopped yellow onion
    1 Can Kidney Beans
    1 Can Navy Beans
    1 Can Pinto Beans
    1 Can Pork and Beans
    1/4 Cup Catsup (Ketchup)
    3 Tablespoons Brown Sugar

*You can substitute dry beans for any of the canned beans but the pork and beans. Just soak dry beans overnight in salt water.

Assemble your recipe ingredients

Meat, and Beans, Beans, Beans

Partially drain the cans of beans, but leave some of the liquid in each. If you are using dry beans, add water to the crock pot after adding the rest of the ingredients. Put the Ham hock into the crock pot first. Add the onion, and all of the beans. Next add the Hamburger, catsup and brown sugar.
(Once you get all of the beans in there, you'll see why it's called calico beans)

The crock pot is going to be very fullwhich is why I recommend a 6 quart. You can get by with a 5 quart crock pot as well. Stir the ingredients and set on low for 7-8 hours, or high for 3-4 hours. If you are able, stir occasionally during this time.

It does not take long at all before the aroma of this dish begins to fill your home. It smells delicious. (Which is good, because that is how it tastes!)

Some Dessert Choices

Your new favorite recipe

Served with Corn bread, this meal is simply fantastic. It's tasty, full of nutrients, filling, and best of all, easy to cook. Remember you can alter the ingredients to suit your taste. I always encourage a little experimentation in the kitchen!

I even have a great corn bread recipe for you. Take one box of Jiffy Corn Bread mix, one box of Jiffy yellow Cake Mix; Mix the cake mix according to directions then add the dry corn bread mix. Put into muffin tins, or a square pan.

For leftovers you can simply re-heat or you can cook some rice to add some variety to your recipe. This is one of those recipes that actually tastes a bit better re-heated, although it is delicious to begin with.

Enjoy your meal!
