Gold Rush Coins of California
Fractional gold coins were produced in California by private companies from 1852 to 1882 during the California Gold Rush that started in 1849.
The population of small Gold mining towns in California increased rapidly as thousands of people stricken with what was called "gold fever" headed west to seek fame and fortune. The small number of coins that these people brought with them quickly created a shortage of small denomination U.S. coins to handle monetary needs. These small gold coins filled the needs of daily day to day commerce during the gold rush.

Small Denomination California Gold Pieces
The severe shortage of coins minted by the U.S. government and the distrust for paper money during the gold rush years in California prompted Fractional gold coins with accurate gold content to be minted by private companies. These small gold coins for use in daily commerce were produced in denominations of 25 cents, 50 cents and one dollar and many of them featured designs that would have been issued by the U.S. government.. These small coins featured shapes that were both round and octagonal. These small gold coins were carried around in pockets and heavily used in general stores, saloons and barber shops and wore out quickly from day to day use. The California Gold Rush (1848-1855)
It all began back in January of 1848 when an individual discovered gold located near Coloma, California. The discovery of gold soon attracted the attention of fortune seekers worldwide and in a few years the number of people affected by "gold fever" located in the California gold settlements had soared to more than three hundred thousand. At the start most of the gold was recovered from from streams and riverbeds by individual prospectors using simple methods such as panning for gold. Later investors formed companies that developed advanced technology for gold recovery. Starting ou there were no laws governing property rights on land containing gold so a system of staking claims was developed. California became a state in 1850. San Francisco Branch Mint Opens In 1854
The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 to process gold into coins and handle the needs of coinage that was desperately needed during the California Gold Rush. Many individuals brought in their privately minted gold coins to be converted into legal tender coins reducing the numbers of fractional gold coins that have survived today.
