California is Full of Scenic Places that Look Good on Jigsaw Puzzles

Native Californians are proud of their state and want to share it with visitors. Whether you live in California or have been one of our many visitors, I hope some of these jigsaw puzzles will bring back memories or introduce you to places you might want to see in person. They come from Zazzle, a print-on-demand site which lets you easily add or change or remove text so that you can get exactly what you want.

Puzzles make great gifts for children and adults. These puzzles come in two sizes. The smaller ones are 10" x 8," have 110 pieces, and come in a gift tin. The larger puzzles are 14" x 10," have 252 pieces, and do not come in a gift tin. All of the puzzles come on sturdy cardboard stock, mounted on chipboard, and have an easy wipe-clean surface.

We will be looking at the puzzles by region. Now let's see what California has to offer in jigsaw puzzles.

Some Puzzles Apply to the Entire State of California

We will begin with the Northern California

This will encompass the area above San Francisco and its surrounding area.

i haven't been able to spend a lot of time in Northern California with a good camera, so I've had to borrow heavily from the work of others here for this collection of puzzles. I have, however spent time in San Francisco and Humboldt County, where we once owned property near Garberville. I have also driven many times to the Oregon border on Highway 1, Interstate 5 or 101. The scenery is magnificent.

Next is the San Francisco Bay Area south to San Jose

I haven't been to San Francisco in 22 years, so to get my San Francisco puzzle collection, I've had to depend on others who were on the scene with their cameras in the Bay Area. The Golden Gate is a sight few forget, but there is certainly more to the city than its bridges. These puzzles bring some of the other other Bay Area scenes to life. One of my favorite places to visit was the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, so I'm glad someone made a puzzle of that.

The aerial photograph this puzzle is based on was taken by James Blakeway. the puzzle has 750 pieces and when completed it will be 38.25" x 11.25." That's approximately a yard wide and a foot tall. Just picture that hanging on your wall when you finish it!. Buy this puzzle here.

Sacramento and the San Joaquin Valley in Puzzles

California's Center of Government and Agriculture

Since most of my own pictures of Sacramento are over 20 years old, I have little to make puzzles with for this region. Please send me your links if you have puzzles of memorable or famous places in Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Turlock, Merced or other cities near Sacramento and west of the Sierra Nevada range. I will add them as you send the links.

Next we will visit the California Central Coast in Puzzles

This extends south of San Jose to Santa Barbara County

This is my home territory. I have spend a lot of time in Carmel, Monterey, Carmel Valley, and the Salinas Valley. I live in San Luis Obispo County, and I often pass through Santa Barbara County. Still, I've had to borrow puzzles from others, since I didn't have a good camera or time to take pictures on most of my own visits. As I try to capture the highlights of San Luis Obispo County in puzzles, I realize how many scenes are still missing. I've tried to concentrate on the shots only a local would be most likely to notice -- the pictures you probably won't see on the souvenir shop postcard racks. I hope you enjoy touring my part of California in puzzles.

Ventura County has a has a great lifestyle.

It was even better before so many other people discovered its beauty and moved in, causing more traffic and the turning of lush agricultural land into housing tracts and more shopping malls.

Next We Will Visit Ventura County and Simi Valley in Puzzles

Ventura County has mountains, beaches, islands, agriculture, a misson, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

The town of Ojai is an artist colony in the mountains of North Ventura County. I have not been there except in passing, with one stop, so I will share the puzzles made by those who are closer to it than I.

The city of Ventura is a beach town, although it's much more than that. The beach is very close to both Ventura's Main Street and Harbor Boulevard. You can walk there from some parts of downtown Ventura. During a brief stop at the beach on Christmas Eve Day, I saw a homeless man with his shopping cart of belongings, including a newly acquired Salvation Army meal in a box. You see him in one of these puzzles, though not his face.

A Puzzle View of the Ventura Mission, Main Street, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley

First we'll look at San Buenaventura Mission at 211 East Main Street.

It was founded in 1782, but was not completed until 1809. I took most of my pictures of it from the outside, since services were in progress inside when I was there.
Ventura Mission from Mall Across Main St. puzzle
Ventura Mission from Mall Across Main St. by barbsbooks
I have called the walkway from which I took this picture a mall, for lack of a better term. This fountain is right across the street from the mission, and there is a lovely park to the left of this walkway, outside of the picture. Seagull watchers will have plenty of action to observe all along this walkway and in the park.
Shrine of the Blessed Mother, Ventura Mission puzzle

When I called the Mission to get the name of this statue, the person who answered the phone said it was the Shrine of the Blessed Mother. I believe their website, which I checked later, said is was "Our Lady of Grace." It is a prominent part of the mission's garden.

This is right next to "Our Lady of Grace." In case you can't see the sign clearly, it reads "Only one life, 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last."

One of the first parts of the Ventura Mission you will notice is its bell tower. I took the picture framed with the nearby treetops.

Main Street Uptown Ventura puzzle

As we move farther east on Main Street, we come to the downtown area. This houses the city's business center, which includes many thrift shops, used book stores, restaurants and unique gift boutiques. Just be ready to pay premium prices for parking or take a long walk if you want to explore it on foot. Like most California beach cities, it has its share of palm trees.

This puzzle shows you just a bit of the fantastic view from the grounds of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Someday I hope to get there on a clear day. Then you can see all the way to the ocean.

Los Angeles

I'm not sure whether Los Angeles borders on the ocean or on oblivion. I always feel that I'm two steps away from the other side when I'm out there. It's more like a vacation place or a place to visit than a place to hunker down.

Los Angeles and Orange Counties Will be Next in our Puzzle Tour of California

This encompasses a lot of territory including Hollywood, Los Angeles, and Long Beach

101 Freeway Near Interchange with Glendale Freeway

The picture above was taken from our car window as we were coming home from Orange County on the day after Christmas. This kind of view is what a typical commuter in Los Angeles or Orange County sees almost every day. Sometimes it's much, much worse. I'm currently waiting for my puzzle of this to be printed.

I included this here because very few puzzles from Orange County have been posted on Zazzle. This may be because puzzles are a fairly new product. It may also be because people in Los Angeles and Orange Counties spend so much time on the freeways they don't have much time to spend making puzzles at Zazzle. That's a shame, because there are so many beautiful spots in both counties.

It's hard to leave Orange County without having a puzzle for Disneyland. Hardly any visitor to Orange County leaves without seeing Disneyland, but the only place I could find a puzzle to represent it was on Amazon. Here is Thomas Kinkade's version of Snow White's Castle.

How Do You Like the Traffic in Los Angeles and Orange County?

Obviously, millions of people love living in these counties, even if they have to commute an hour or more to work one way. For us, it just wasn't worth it. When we no longer were tied to jobs there, we moved to Ventura County, which was much less congested in the 1980's when we lived in Newbury Park. I would never go back to the larger cities unless I had to. I dread every trip through Los Angeles and Orange Counties I have to make, and wouldn't go if people I loved didn't live there.

How about you? Are the advantages of living in one of California's large cities in either northern or southern California worth the hassle of crowded freeways on a daily commute? Is the advantage of living in any large city worth it?
