Tips for Buying Real Extra Virgin Olive Oil

California Oils Are Certified Extra Virgin

BERKELEY, Calif. (April 25, 2011) - With two reports published by the University of California within the last year finding that a great majority of top-selling imported olive oils labeled as "extra virgin" fail to meet the international criteria for extra virgin, many consumers are confused if the oil they are purchasing is real extra virgin olive oil.
American consumers spend more than $720 million each year for olive oil as demand has soared in recent years as consumers choose to combine great taste and healthier eating choices. According to the California Olive Oil Council (COOC), a vast selection of real extra virgin olive oils are easy to find and at a wide range of price points in specialty stores, grocery stores and supermarkets as well as online. When in doubt, consumers should look for the "California Certified Extra Virgin" seal on California olive oils. The COOC maintains a rigorous certification program that requires the highest standards to be met for an oil to earn the extra virgin seal for fresh, certified California oils.
"Consumers can look for the California certified extra virgin olive oil seal and buy with confidence knowing they are buying real extra virgin olive oil," said Patty Darragh, executive director of the COOC.
California's olive oil industry, while young, has quickly proven it can make outstanding extra virgin olive oils. Newly-elected COOC Board President Brendon Flynn of Pacific Farms and Orchards points to the recent COOC Annual Olive Oil Competition that resulted in a record breaking 53 gold and 58 silver medal winners as proof. Flynn added, "This competition demonstrates the high-quality and variety of olive oil being made by artisans to major producers throughout California." The competition drew 65 member-producers, submitting 143 oils from the current harvest. The list of all the winners can be found at www.cooc.com.
How can consumers be sure they are purchasing the highest-quality extra virgin olive oil? One expert, Ruth Mercurio, managing partner of We Olive, a premier retailer of California olive oil, recommends the following tips:

Olive Oil by The Artisanal Kitchen Elevates Home Cooking

Olive Oil and Fresh Rose MaryOlive Oil by The Artisanal Kitchen Elevates Home Cooking
By: Carly Zinderman, Senior Staff Writer | Posted: Apr. 26th, 2011
Anna Zoitas of The Artisanal Kitchen has just introduced Three Olives Olive Oil, made from 100 percent California olives.

A now 30-something entrepreneur, Anna grew up in New York City but spent her summers visiting her grandparents' farm in Greece, where she got closer to the source of natural foods and artisan living. "With my siblings, we used to gather fresh eggs from the chickens, feed the sheep with a milk bottle, play with the rabbits and try to stay away from the smelly hogs. I learned to cook on an outdoor fire and use farm fresh ingredients."

Anna's attraction to natural and artisanal foods has led her to create specialty brands The Artisanal Kitchen and Urban Tribe. The Artisanal Kitchen family of products now includes Three Olives Olive Oil, which combines three different olives for a very special flavor. "The flavor of California olive oil is more mellow, lighter and foodier than with imports, which tend to have a more peppery taste profile," says Zoitas.

The special blend of olives include:

The Fruity Arbequina
While the olive oil is produced in California, this small olive is native to Spain's Catalonia region. Soft textured and delicately flavored, it's delicious served with pasta, salads or with hors d'oeuvres.

The Fruity, Slightly Nutty Arbosana
This small, more robust olive has a fruity, slightly nutty flavor with a more pungent, peppery kick. Its high polyphenol level is believed to help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

The Very Fruity & Flavorful Koroneiki
Originally from Kalamata, Greece, Koroneiki olives are very fruity, with a fabulous aroma, and help to make the olive oil exceptionally tasty.

I was privileged to receive a sample of Three Olives Olive Oil. It made me immediately want to dip bread or pita into the light blend, so that the mellowness of the olive flavor wouldn't be lost in a heavy sauce. It certainly wasn't.

New Study Finds Most Top-Selling Imported Olive Oil Sold in U.S. is Mislabeled as "Extra Virgin"

This is why we established a certification program in California

Further Proof that Consumers Are Unknowingly Buying Mislabeled Olive Oil

DAVIS, Calif., April 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study finds that most olive oil imported into the U.S. fails to meet the international criteria for "extra virgin." With American consumers spending more than $720 million each year for olive oil, the study's results indicate that a great majority of consumers are paying a premium price for mislabeled "extra virgin" olive oil which fails to meet recognized standards and is often rancid or adulterated with cheaper refined oils.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110413/SF82310LOGO)

"This study is further proof that consumers are unknowingly buying mislabeled olive oil," said Patty Darragh, executive director of the California Olive Oil Council. "The evidence continues to build that substandard foreign olive oil is being intentionally dumped in the U.S. to take advantage of the growing demand for olive oil among American consumers."

According to the new study released by the Olive Center at the University of California, Davis, most of the top selling imported olive oil brands regularly failed to meet the international standards for "extra virgin" olive oil. Among the findings were that 73 percent of the 134 samples of the five top-selling imported "extra virgin" olive oil brands failed the International Olive Council (IOC) sensory standards based on the results of two IOC-accredited sensory panels. Sensory defects are indicators that these oil samples were oxidized, of poor quality or adulterated with cheaper refined olive oil. The five top-selling imported brands are Filippo Berio, Bertolli, Pompeian, Colavita and Star.

Additionally, 70 percent of the samples of the five top-selling imported brands failed a 1,2-diacyglycerol content test and 50 percent of the samples of the five top-selling imported brands failed the pyropheophytins test. Both of these tests are used to assess olive oil quality and were conducted in addition to the IOC's chemistry and sensory testing methods.

This is the second and final study in the past year focused on the quality of "extra virgin" olive oil conducted by UC Davis' Olive Center. A study released in July, 2010, found that 69% of the samples of imported olive oils labeled as "extra virgin" and sold in California supermarkets and big box retail stores, failed to meet internationally-accepted standards to be called "extra virgin" olive oil since the oils were deemed to be too old, poorly made and/or adulterated. This new study analyzed fewer brands than the first study but more samples of each brand to improve the analysis of each brand and it utilized two sensory panels instead of the one panel used in last year's study.

Both studies were initiated to investigate a number of confirmed reports that imported olive oils available for purchase in the United States labeled as "extra virgin" were actually lower quality oil. The California olive oil industry and many retailers have long been worried that consumers may be purchasing bottles labeled "extra virgin" but actually receiving something quite different.

"While there are many excellent imported and domestic olive oils available, our tests indicate that there are serious quality problems out there," said Dan Flynn, executive director of the Olive Center at UC Davis and a co-author of the new report.

"Extra virgin" is the highest grade of olive oil and must be extracted from the olive without heat or solvents. International and U.S. Department of Agriculture standards also require that "extra virgin" olive oils meet specific criteria for chemical makeup and sensory qualities including flavor and aroma. Because of these required standards, "extra virgin" olive oil commands a top price. Federal law prohibits a company from not disclosing that it is selling a blend of oils on the label. Yet, olive oil can be exported to the United States and labeled as "extra virgin" even if the same oils would not meet the standards for "extra virgin" in Europe.

"It is time that we tighten our standards to prevent mislabeled olive oil from being sold to unsuspecting consumers," said California State Senator Lois Wolk, chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Olive Oil Production and Emerging Products. "This study further confirms that California's olive oil industry can compete and thrive in a fair marketplace. A level playing field will protect consumers and reward producers who meet or exceed high standards."

The United States is the third-largest olive oil consumer in the world. Ninety-nine percent of the olive oil that the U.S. consumes is imported. Demand for "extra virgin" olive oil has soared in recent years thanks in part to cable food channels, celebrity chefs and the health benefits of the popular Mediterranean Diet. Food savvy American consumers are reaching for "extra virgin" olive oil to combine great taste and healthier choices. As a result, according to the latest figures, more than 75 million gallons of olive oil were sold in the U.S. in 2009, up from 47 million gallons just ten years ago.

"This is why we established a certification program in California to ensure that when consumers buy a California-produced olive oil with the Certified Extra Virgin seal on it, they know they are buying real 'extra virgin' olive oil," said Darragh. She added, "The time has come to stop this deceit and force these companies to meet the standards."

2011 is a Good Year of olive Oil

The California Olive Oil Council has just finished its agricultural survey. Executive Director Patty Darragh says statewide production is up around 30% this year and on track to exceed one million gallons by early 2011.

"That's a big increase and when we reach that mark we will have surpassed French olive oil production so we're very excited about that."

Darragh says California farmers are planting about 8,000 acres of new olive trees every year. Producers are also opening new olive oil tasting rooms%u2026at the rate of about one a month.

"Sometimes they're free-standing, sometimes they're attached to where the milling operations is, so there's a whole variety of them."

California produces nearly all of the olive oil made in the U.S. and the Central Valley is the largest production area in the state.

A Seal-Certified olive oil offers the highest standard of quality to American consumers.

The Top California Olive Oils

The California Olive Oil Council is the only North American certified quality control program that exceeds strict International standards for True Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A Seal-Certified olive oil offers the highest standard of quality to American consumers.

The oils listed here have met all requirements for Seal Certification, including:

* Olives mechanically extracted without chemicals or excessive heat
* Less than .5% free oleic acid
* Positive taste elements and no taste defects, as determined during a blind tasting

If olive oil is high in fat, why is it considered healthy?

Olive oil: What are the health benefits?

Mayo Clinic
If olive oil is high in fat, why is it considered healthy?
Answer
from Donald Hensrud, M.D.

The main type of fat found in all kinds of olive oil is monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). MUFAs are actually considered a healthy dietary fat. If your diet emphasizes unsaturated fats, such as MUFAs and polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), instead of saturated fats and trans fats, you may gain certain health benefits.

MUFAs and PUFAs may help lower your risk of heart disease by improving related risk factors. For instance, MUFAs may lower your total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. MUFAs may also help normalize blood clotting. And some research shows that MUFAs may also benefit insulin levels and blood sugar control, which can be especially helpful if you have type 2 diabetes.

But even healthier fats like olive oil are high in calories, so use them only in moderation. Choose MUFA-rich foods such as olive oil instead of other fatty foods - particularly butter and stick margarine - not in addition to them. And remember that you can't make unhealthy foods healthier simply by adding olive oil to them.

Also, be aware that heat, light and air can affect the taste of olive oil and possibly its health-promoting nutrients. Store olive oil in a dark, room-temperature cupboard, or even in the refrigerator. The fats and healthy phytonutrients in olive oil - as well as the taste - can slowly degrade over time, so it's probably best to use it within a year or within six months once opened.

Award Wining Olive Oil

From California

My Wife and I have the pleasure of Meeting Dewey Lucero a few years ago at Disney's California Adventure during the annual food festival, we sampled may of the fine olive oils and we can home with many bottles. They were all first class and we enjoy cooking with them all the time. You have to give then a try if you are looking for some home grown California Olive Oil.

Our Story
We are 3rd generation California olive growers from a rural community that has a history of producing the country's most delicious olives. Corning's century old trees are some of the oldest in the state, and many thrive in our family groves.

Lucero Olive Oil, LLC is the result of four generations of farming and producing olives in Northern California. The rural community Corning, "The Olive Capital," has some of the oldest olive trees in California, and many of these century-old trees continue to flourish in the Lucero family groves. Dewey's maternal grandfather, has been one of the foremost olive growers in Northern California (since 1946 ~ 62 years), owning his own nursery for over 27 years. He grew a majority of the olive trees now in production in Northern California. Over 37 years, Dewey's paternal grandfather started producing small quantities of olive oil for his family and friends. His olive oil was so popular it would sell out in a matter of days. In 2004 Dewey took a leap of faith and started to develop a family label, pressed large quantities of oil and began to market and sell Lucero Olive Oil across California. Since then the Lucero's have been growing and producing more and more top quality olive oil each year...the rest is history in the making.

California Olive Oil Council

The California Olive Oil Council was founded in 1992. The COOC is a non-profit trade and marketing association whose purpose is to promote the growing of olives and the production of olive oil in California. The COOC supports certified olive oil standards and provides grower, producer and consumer education.

Through our Seal Certification program, we help everyone from home chefs to restaurants find guaranteed extra virgin olive oils for their kitchen.

Meetings and events, many of them open to the public, focus on a wide range of subjects, from marketing olive oil to managing their orchards.
California Olive Oil Council - Home
- Health Benefits...The Importance of extra virgin olive oil in your daily diet! The COOC petitioned the USDA in 2005 requesting the adoption on internationally accepted standards for grades of olive oil. We are still awaiting adoption of these standards.

Olive Growers Council of California

When the Olive Growers Council was organized as a bargaining cooperative, it entered the California scene as the only organization with the mission of trying to improve prices paid to farmers for their table olives delivered to the commercial processors. The 1978 olive harvest was a disaster. With a large crop on the horizon, the processors offered a price to growers that barely allowed enough money to harvest the crop. This incident provided the incentive for farmers to hire a bargaining consultant (Ralph Bunje), who provided the initial leadership to organize and become an active bargaining association.

Always with an attitude of being fair and reasonable, the bargaining association has impacted the olive industry in a positive way as prices have moved up significantly since organized in 1978-79. From an average price in '78 of under $200 per ton, growers now enjoy price ranges from $1000 to $1200 per ton. The Olive Growers Council has been the moving force in taking table olive prices to a higher level.

How to Make Olive Oil

http://apollooliveoil.com/

Apollo olive oil is made on the only mill in the US that uses vacuum technology. This greatly reduces oxidation resulting in the highest level of polyphenols possible. This process produces the healthiest and most flavorful California olive oil available.

Apollo Olive Oils are among the few in California that are certified both organic and extra virgin. They are raw, unadulterated, and 100% cold-pressed on the vacuum mill designed in Tuscany to preserve the highest levels of flavor, nutrients, and anti-oxidants. In fact, our award-winning oils average three times the polyphenols of typical extra virgin olive oils.

Apollo Olive Oil is a small, family-run business. Our pride is in producing flavorful and healthy olive oils in the finest tradition. We tend our trees with organic, sustainable methods, harvest by hand at optimum ripeness, and exercise great care in milling and blending.

Know Before You Buy

* If you can, buy extra virgin. By far the most popular kind of olive oil, "extra virgin" means the oil comes from the first pressing of the olives and includes no refined oil. "Pure" or plain olive oil is considered inferior in quality to extra virgin, and not that much cheaper.

* Buy in small quantities at first. If you're unsure whether a supermarket-brand olive oil is right for you, try buying a size smaller than the standard 17-ounce bottle. This is especially good advice if you're buying an expensive imported oil (provided the smaller sizes are available).

* Educate your palate. If you really want to investigate the infinite permutations of olive oil, consider signing up for an olive-oil tasting, which will tell you what to look for in a premium (or supermarket) oil. Then you'll be much better equipped to choose among the imported and artisanal brands. Hosting an olive-oil tasting at home has become a fun party idea.

Celebrating Our First Harvest!

Red Rock Olive Oil of California is proud to offer our 2011 Harvest of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The decision to harvest later in the season delivered outstanding results! Our December 2011 Arbequina Olive Oil is a fruity and fragrant flavor low in bitterness and medium in pungency. Because of our late harvest, the more mature fruit delivers a fruity, smooth, slightly buttery forefront with a mild peppery (pungent) finish; it's got character - that is what differentiates our Arbequina from traditional Arbequina Olive Oils. We blended it with a small percent of Mission variety to add stability and longevity to the oil. Its pleasing taste is ideal for salads, dipping, pasta dishes, fish and poultry.

What some People Say

Olive oil, also known as "liquid gold" has a plethora of amazing health benefits. It has been linked to low rates of coronary heart disease, obesity, certain cancers and Type 2 diabetes. Studies show that people taking high blood pressure medication could actually reduce their dosage if they substituted extra virgin olive oil in their diet in place of other types of fats.
In fact, medical studies indicate that Mediterranean countries, where olive oil consumption is high, suffer less cardiovascular problems from any other country in the world where the ratio of the consumption of animal fat is high or simply the nutrition parameters are poor.

Additionally, olive oil in your daily diet helps keep your metabolism at a good balance, and your body's growth and bone growth at good levels, which is especially important in children. Olive oil has been linked to helping maintain good levels of Vitamin E in the human body. This vitamin has the property to delay the change of the cellular structure that leads to natural decadence, or in other words it can delay aging!

Beyond these incredible benefit s of adding olive oil to your regular diet, it has many other uses related to your health. It is often used to maintain skin and muscle suppleness, to heal abrasions, to give body and shine to hair and soothe the drying effects of sun and wind. It has also been used in remedies to strengthen weak nails, aid digestion, promote hair growth, relieve aching muscles and even cure the effects of alcohol consumption.

And not to mention it is absolutely delicious to cook with on top of all these great factors. Use it as a staple in your cooking to improve your health!
