Finding Unclaimed Money in California

California has the highest population of all of the 50 states, so it stands to reason that of all states, CA is sitting on one of the biggest piles of unclaimed money.

Despite a number of court rulings and ongoing political battles, tracking down one's missing money is still easier said than done.  You can't rely on the government to track you down and return your missing money, so it's important that YOU take the initiative and track down your California unclaimed money yourself!

Locating Your Unclaimed Funds in California

Good news for Californians! In addition to the $6 BILLION in unclaimed money, in California alone, the California Treasury Department has recently been ordered to pay interest on some assets to the tune of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS!

That's right, the Golden State alone is holding on to millions of citizens' missing money, and because of the way the state has handled these assets in the past, a court ruling recently came down forcing the state to pay hundreds of millions, just in interest, to everyday people LIKE YOU!

And that wasn't the only recent court ruling regarding California unclaimed money. Earlier this year the state was ordered to stop seizing citizens' assets, because it was found that CA's treasury department wasn't making enough of an effort to notify the owners of unclaimed funds that the cash existed.

Just recently that ruling was lifted, as it is now believed that California has remedied the problem, and now has notification better rules in place. That remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure - California is sitting on a mountain of unclaimed property, and you can't rely on them to let you know about your share. Governments are consistently incompetent when it comes to handling money, so you owe it to yourself to make every effort to track down and claim your funds.

Remember, unclaimed property comes from a variety of sources:

  • dormant savings and checking accounts
  • cash or property like cashiers checks
  • securities
  • stocks
  • uncashed money orders
  • safe deposit box contents
  • lost cash dividends
  • unused gift certificates
  • unclaimed insurance benefits
  • unclaimed security deposits
  • payroll checks
  • found utility deposits
  • mineral royalty payments
  • court deposits
  • credits

  • And with an estimated 7 in 10 due a claim, there's a good chance you could soon have found money, if you simply put in the effort, after learning how to properly search for your lost money.
