The Legend of Aang

Opening Narrative to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 1 Chapter 1:

"My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless Firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

A hundred years have passed and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the war. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe.

Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and that the cycle is broken, but I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow the Avatar will return to save the world

Plot Summary

The Basics of Avatar

Avatar: The Last Airbender is in a vaguely Asian world where people called benders can manipulate the elements. There are four kingdoms, each based upon an element and the benders of kingdom: Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads.

Aang is a young airbender that comes to find out he is the Avatar, a being that can master all elements, wield godlike powers, and keep the peace between the four nations. Aang runs away and is trapped in a storm, and is ultimately encased in ice for 100 years.

During those 100 years, the firebenders of the Fire Nation have attacked the other nations, wiping out the Air Nomads and close to bringing the Earth Kingdom to its knees.

Aang is rescued by two Water Tribesmen from his icy tomb. Not long after, he becomes a symbol for hope for all peoples of the world as he journeys to learn how to master all four elements.

Aang's journey will take him to fantastic places, high adventure, and exotic animals. He will make friends and enemies as he masters his powers and strives for his destiny, to become the Avatar.
