A World at War has never been so intensely vicious

Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2. The game is set in the Pacific theater and Eastern front of World War II.

The story focuses on the final battles of World War II in the Pacific and Eastern Europe involving the United States, the Empire of Japan, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany. It is told from the perspectives of a Marine Raider and a Red Army soldier, and is based on several historical battles, including the Makin Island raid, the Battle of Peleliu, and the Battle of Berlin. The multiplayer portion of the game contains various game modes, and contains a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons and rewards as they progress.

A special mode called "Nacht Der Untoten (Night of the Undead)" is unlocked once the player completes the single player campaign. In it, up to four players must attempt to defend themselves from limitless waves of undead Nazi soldiers. (read more)

We all know war to be a terrible thing; brutal, grotesque and unrelenting. World at War goes further than last year's Modern Warfare in showing the realities of the battlefield, and how madness can take over no matter who's winning or losing.

First Person Shooter of the Year?

I've played all of these games and I think Left 4 Dead is the best overall. Shooting zombies sure is fun and mirror's edge is just spectacular as an idea. Call of Duty 5 is definitely fun, but not revolutionary compared to CoD4. I did enjoy the bell tower level because it reminded me a bit of Band of Brothers. Far Cry is great but unfortunately the driving drove me nuts. Resistance 2 also deserves a mention due to the awesome co-op multiplayer.

COD5 takes a crack at freshening up the WWII formula with flamethrowers, a slightly more tropical setting, and all kinds of M-rated blood and profanity. Big ups to Treyarch for the giddy surprise factor of the multiplayer Nazi Zombie mode. Zombie mode supports 4 players and has an unlimited amount of rounds. The zombies get increasingly more intelligent and in larger numbers as the wave rises.

CoD 4: MW vs CoD: WaW

Call of Duty 4 was last year's greatest game. Now we have a new entry in the Call of Duty franchise known as World at War. It comes to us from the hands of those who churned out the maligned Call of Duty 3, but this time Treyarch has managed to make a highly exciting and fully realized wartime first-person shooter. But is it enough to topple last year's greatest production?

Which war would you rather be fighting?

CoD 4

mob$ter says:

CoD 4. They made it worse by getting rid of chopper, air strike, and UAV for dogs, artillery, and recon plane. i love the chopper. The dogs kinda suck. it lasts for 1/10 of the round and you can constantly get more. So i love CoD 4 way more.

This is THE game to get this holiday season or even into next year. With many popular games such as Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2 out, there was doubt that World at War could hold its own, but 180,000 players on Xbox Live after 3 days speaks for itself. It is not merely Call of Duty 4 with a skin, but a massive improvement to the #1 Xbox Live game for over 6 months.
