Handwriting is easy...
Calligraphy for kids

It is a good idea to compare letter shapes together with the child, point out similarities and differences between them and present how one letter could be transformed into another by adding a simple element, for instance a line. The Internet is a rich source of exercises in drawing borders, as well as exercises supporting the process of learning to write. After completing the single-word stage, two-word names or word clusters should be introduced, following by short sentences. Most of these exercises are relatively simple and easy for the child, although more complex exercise sets are available as well.

Practice, practice, practice...
Another aspect of learning to write is the style and aesthetic quality of letters, which directly affect the legibility of the produced text. A neat handwriting is both pleasant to look at and useful, as it does not render the text indecipherable.
Additionally, exercises in decorative writing could be introduced, which will help the child develop its skills in calligraphy. By treating these exercises as if they were a mere play, we will certainly not push the child's limits, but we may as well instil a passion for calligraphy.
The exercises should be considered as a play, so that the child remains relaxed at all times. Another important point is to give rewards, so praise the child for each completed task. This way, a thread of understanding is established between the child and the parent, which positively affects both the child's performance and everyday communication. Playing and exercising together has a tremendous influence in the relationship between the child and the parent.

Handwriting for right and left-handed children
Right or left hand...
Bear in mind that right and left-handed children must be taught to write in slightly different ways. The place should be adjusted to the child's specific needs. Note that:
- right-handed children need light coming from their left side, while the child should be seated to the right side of the desk; they need writing instruments designed for right-hand use;
- left-handed children need light coming from their right side, while the child should be seated to the left side of the desk; they need writing instruments designed for left-hand use.
Manual skills and handwriting...
Practice, practice, practice...

Teaching a child to write is never easy, so remember about employing drawing and colouring exercises, which improve the manual skills that are also in use when writing. The ability to draw vertical and horizontal lines and circles gained through basic drawing exercises will prove a great help for calligraphic exercises at a later stage.
