Why Learn Calligraphy
Today, we see calligraphy writing used on invitations, placecards, inspirational quotes, greeting cards, announcements, awards, logo designs and much more - including scrapbooks, T-shirts and mugs.
When taking the time to learn calligraphy by applying a lot of practice and patience, one becomes an artist of fine handwriting bringing much enjoyment and a feeling of confidence at acquiring such a special skill.

Calligraphy History
Calligraphy means beautiful writing, from the Greek kalligraphia.Until the 8th century, various alphabet scripts were used by different monasteries. At that time, a standardized script was developed by several famous monasteries and it later evolved into the Gothic script. In 1454, when the first printing press was invented, Gutenberg adopted the Gothic style - our first typeface. There are many different alphabet styles used today such as Roman, which is usually used for short pieces, and Italic which is more informal, and many, many more styles. The beginner might start with the Uncial hand. Japanese calligraphy uses a brush and ink. Reference material for the many different calligraphy alphabets is easily available, along with calligraphy pens.

Need an Envelope for your Calligraphy? Quick and Easy Envelopes You Can Make
ENVELOPE IDEA NO. 1This envelope is for a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 birthday card
You will need an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper and a glue stick.
Step 1 - Cut off 1-1/2" of one long edge so you are working with a 7" x 11" sheet of paper.
Step 2 - Fold in the long edges 1/4"
Step 3 - Measure 4-1/4" from the bottom edge. Turn up the bottom edge 4-1/4".
Glue the edges, forming the pocket for the card. Also, glue the folded
side edges of the top 2-1/2" so the flap lays flat.
Step 4 - Measure 2" from the top. Fold down the top 2".
ENVELOPE IDEA NO. 2.
If you have an envelope that is the size you want to make, open out the envelope. Lay it on a piece of paper and trace around. Cut it out, fold and glue.
