Calligraphy means beautiful writing, from the Greek kalligraphia.

Calligraphy has been used since ancient times, the first Roman Alphabet dating back many centuries. After the fall of Rome, Europe entered into the Dark Ages and Uncial lettering, with more rounded letters having cursive forms, then developed and was used in monasteries. The art of lettering had spread to many other parts of the world and many alphabets have been developed over time.

Until the 8th century, various alphabet scripts were used by different monasteries. At that time, a standardized script was developed by several famous monasteries and it later evolved into the Gothic script. In 1454, when the first printing press was invented, Gutenberg adopted the Gothic style - our first typeface. There are many different alphabet styles used today such as Roman, which is usually used for short pieces, and Italic which is more informal, and many, many more styles. The beginner might start with the Uncial hand. Reference material for the many different calligraphy alphabets is easily available, along with calligraphy pens.

ENVELOPE IDEA NO. 1
This envelope is for a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 birthday card
You will need an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper and a glue stick.

Step 1 - Cut off 1-1/2" of one long edge so you are working with a 7" x 11" sheet of paper.

Step 2 - Fold in the long edges 1/4"

Step 3 - Measure 4-1/4" from the bottom edge. Turn up the bottom edge 4-1/4".
Glue the edges, forming the pocket for the card. Also, glue the folded
side edges of the top 2-1/2" so the flap lays flat.

Step 4 - Measure 2" from the top. Fold down the top 2".

ENVELOPE IDEA NO. 2.

If you have an envelope that is the size you want to make, open out the envelope. Lay it on a piece of paper and trace around. Cut it out, fold and glue.
