Surprise your loved one and wish them Happy Valentine's Day on their Korean cell phone!

Hwan-yong-ham-ni-da ! An-yong-ha-se-yo.
( welcome and hello!)

According to Wikipedia, the population of South Korea is over 48,333,000, and there are 47,000,000 cell phones in use! That means 97.2% of the folks there have a cell phone.
But trying to call friends and loved ones in Korea to wish them Happy Valentie's Day on their cell phones can be tricky. They gave you the number, you try to call but just can't get through! Now what??? Here's a few tips and tricks and things I've learned when I call my friends in Korea on their cell phones!

“sarang hae yo means I Love You in Korean!”

It's all in the numbers.....

First let's start with the number. The complete Korean cell phone number should look something like this. xxx-xx-xx-xxxx-xxxx
Whew! That's a lot, so let's break it down.......

International Code+Country Code + Cell Code + Local Number

International Code...

Korean cell phoneWhen starting to dial your friend in Korea, the first three numbers are easy! To begin, all international calls start with 011.

Country Code

The country Code come next. So we look it up and find out South Korea's Country Code is 82. So far still pretty easy, huh?

Now we've got a number like this..

001-82-xx-xxxx-xxxx

Cell Code

And now we'll add the Korean cell phone code. If you've been given a Korean cell phone number, It will start with "010," '011," "016" or "017", or something similar depending on the carrier. When we're dialing from America we'll need to drop that first 0 and add it to our numbers so far. So "010" becomes "10". Got it?

So we're getting there...

011-82-10-xxxx-xxxx

Local Number

Talk on Korean cell phoneYeah! We're almost done... just add the Korean cell phone number and we're ready to chat!

011-82-10-1234-5678

..and if you plan on dong some catching up and chatting for a while, just click the pic for some great pre-paid rates! I've used this from my land line and from my cell with great results.

My Tips.....

1. Don't forget, South Korea is 14 hours ahead from the East Coast. 8:00 am in Delaware is 10:00 pm in Seoul. So please keep that in mind when you call Korea to your your friend's cell phone!
2. Phone rates can be pretty expensive. Check into a phone card from Nobel for the best rates.

Just a few more things.....

Prepaid calling cards are great to call Korea, or anywhere around the globe without any agreements, contracts or monthly bills. Calls can be made from any type of phone, private and public, even hotels or offices. Many of these prepaid calling cards also offer PIN-less dialing, an option that allows you to avoid using all those complicated codes when placing a call.
