A boy (Calvin) and his tiger (Hobbes)

Calvin and Hobbes is arguably the best comic strip of its time and perhaps the greatest comic strip of all time. Created by Bill Watterson, the strip focused on a mischievous young boy named Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes who presumably was a real live tiger who could talk to Calvin when no one else was around. To adults though, Hobbes was just an inanimate stuffed toy. The moments when the tiger comes to life are probably owed to Calvin's vivid imagination resulting in the two of them becoming inseperable best friends, exploring, playing and goofing around.

Nemesis

Who is Calvin's Greatest Foil?

We all know that Calvin was a handful sometimes (o.k., most of the time) and he often questioned authority, often viewing his elders as his foes. Most of the time, these elders were only looking out for Calvin's best interests, but somehow, in Calvin's wild and vivid imagination, he didn't always see it as so. Other times he was just a victim of circumstance. Who in this list do you think was the biggest pain in the butt for Calvin, in other words, his greatest foil?

"Bill Watterson " Song Video

Unofficial

This is a video for a song by Lemon Demon about an obsessed fan who is trying to get in touch with the creator of Calvin& Hobbes, Bill Watterson.

I have to admit that it is quite humourous and the guy who portrayed Watterson bears a close resemblance.

Calvin and Hobbes Anniversary

It's still hard to believe that it ended as long ago as it did, let alone how long ago it started. Calvin and Hobbes made its debut on the comics page on November 18th, 1985.

Hobbes: Real or Make Believe

How do you look at it?

Faithful readers of Calvin and Hobbes will recall that whenever the tiger was depicted in the same comic panel with anyone besides Calvin, he was drawn as an inanimate stuffed toy. However, once alone with Calvin, he came to life, much larger than Calvin and was even able to speak. Some readers have always had different views of this. Some think that Hobbes would only reveal himself to Calvin by magically coming to life while others think Hobbes was nothing more than a toy and his ability to walk and talk was a result of Calvin's vivid and wild imagination. What do you think?

Was Hobbes a product of Calvin's imagination or did he magically come to life when nobody else was around?

Calvin's Imagination

DrIntrepid says:

He magically came to life by the sheer audacity of Calvin's imagination.

Julian Nieto says:

i say that some is based on real events like when they did calvin trying to lear swimming lesson that was real for me . another example is that i left my toy dinosaur in the woods .so some can be real or made up cus a kid can't be in trobue for so many thing

canoz says:

Calvin's alter ego that allows him to make sense of the world! Love him! Who else understands Calvin so well.... but himself???

Rewards4life says:

Didn't we all have a Hobbes when we were young?

Unknown1775 says:

Magic

Amitabh1702 says:

Of course, Hobbes is real. Why this doubt?

AnnaleeBlysse says:

Well, magical enough to get me giggling more times than I can possibly remember. Wonderful comic strip. I did enjoy a few others, but Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite.

Lio Makes a Gruesome Discovery

Finds comic colleague

This might be a little too morbid for loyal Calvin & Hobbes fans but I found it funny but also a little disturbing.

Lio, another little boy comic strip character, makes a gruesome discovery when he finds the remains of a boy next to a stuffed toy tiger.

Kind of puts a damper on the whole "they lived happily ever after" ending, doesn't it?

How Dare He!

How could you Lio?

When Calvin and Hobbes ended, readers were left with a warm, fuzzy feeling as the mischievous boy and his tiger go off, exploring.

But the creator of the comic strip, Lio, envisioned a different ending, one with a much more morbid tone.

Definitely when his father tells him that black and white photos are a result of being taken before the world changed colour. They never changed colour when the rest of the world did because they were photos of black and white things! Classic. I think Calvin's dad has a lot to answer for..... lol

Calvin's Comment Cultivator Contraption

Reader Feedback

Known for his many unusual inventions, I pondered what Calvin might have invented for his many readers and fans to leave him and this lens comments of praise. Would Calvin expect any other kind? Therefore, I surmised that he would have come up with something fashioned out of a cardboard box and written across it in crayon, Calvin's Comment Cultivator Contraption. Minus the box, here is your chance to use said contraption.
