About Calypso Cave

Calypso Cave (Għar Calypso) is situated in Xaghra on the island of Gozo. The cave is actually quite small but the attraction is that you can clamber right through it fairly quickly and from the back you get a great view over the golden beach at Ramla. The underwater barrier built by the Knights of Malta is clearly visible beneath the clear, azure waters.

Some think the cave was mentioned by Homer in The Odyssey. There are more other caves in the ciffs below the main one. Sadly, as in many open caves without guardians, litter can be a problem.

Entrance is free and the cave can be reached from Victoria bus terminus by buses 64 or 65; more people visit the cave as I did on a taxi tour of the island.

Gozo Video Montage

Somebody else has compiled this video of a series of photos of northern Gozo featuring Ramla Bay, Xaghra and Ta' Kenuna, Nadur including some shots from above Calypso Cave. To wacth on YouTube, click here.
