In 1627 John Harvard entered Emmanuel College as an undergraduate.
He later emigrated to America bequeathing his library and half his estate to the college founded in 1636 at Newtowne, Massachusetts.
In 1638 the college was named after him and Newtowne was renamed Cambridge. - Gonville and Caius College (pronounced "Keys") was originally founded by Edmund Goville as Gonville Hall in 1348. John Caius, who had changed his name from John Keys and trained to be a doctor in Italy, restored and renamed the College from 1557, building the 3 gates: Humility, Virtue and Honour. New students entered the College through the Gate of Humility, while studying in the College they would pass through the Gate of Virtue every day, and finally when they left to receive their degrees they departed through the Gate of Honour. He also has the distinction of being the only Master of a Cambridge College to appear in a Shakespeare play, as the bumbling eccentric Dr Caius in the Merry Wives of Windsor.
