Cameo Jewelry - Beautiful Artistry and Design
I just adore cameo jewelry! Whether it be pendants, lockets, rings, brooches, or bracelets. I think just about all cameos are beautiful, no matter the subject. Most cameo jewelry is the image of a woman's head, however any image can, and is, used to make cameos. They are usually carved out of shell or agate.
Shell cameos are still being hand-carved by very talented craftsman at The Shell and Coral Carving Center of Torre Del Greco.
Gemstone and agate cameo carvings are done ultrasonically with a computer template of the original artwork. Agate cameos are known to be very resistant to chipping and will not peel, crack, fade, or discolor with age.
There is something for all cameo jewelry lovers here.

Cameo jewelry - A Brief History
The definition of CAMEO is:A stone or shell cut in relief using the object itself to produce shadings of the carving.
It is still being debated which of the following is the correct origin for the word CAMEO.
KAMEA (hebrew) - a charm or amulet.
CAMMAEUS (latin) - "engraved gem"
Although it is not known when the first cameo was carved, we do know there were cameos being made in ancient Greece as far back as 6th century BC. Cameo Jewelry was also very popular in ancient Rome.
During the Renaissance, France became and remained, the dominant cameo center of the world through the 1700's.
England began to develop it's own style of cameo jewelry making during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
The United States cameo creation came into it's own during the art nouveau period (early 1900'S) with the popularity of Tiffany's.
However, Italy is still the major center of cameo production today.

Antique Cameos
"A thing of beauty is a joy forever"... I think that famous quote was written about Antique Cameos. Some Antique Cameos are truly amazing pieces of world history, and a reflection of the times they represent.Antique Lava Cameo - pictured
Lava cameo from around 1820s in very good condition and excellent details. The frame appears to be brass with a gold wash over it. There is an old hook type pin on the rear and its in good working order. It measures 1 1/2 inches high and 1 1/4 inch wide. Its a large impressive piece with lots of character.

Cameo Jewelry - Care and Cleaning
Shell cameos are subject to discoloration and cracking from dryness, aging, and the elements and they require more care than hard stone cameos. Since dust can scratch and damage shell cameos make sure you dust your shell cameos with a soft brush regularly. Afterwards rinse with warm water and very gently dry with a soft cloth. - Never use soap, or jewelry cleaners on shell cameos!Wash your stone or gem cameo gently with a with a very soft toothbrush using a mild soap and water Be sure to rinse the cameo off immediately and thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Moisturizing your cameo after cleaning is essential. Mineral or baby oil will work fine, and you can apply with a Q-tip or fingertip. The oil should be allowed to penetrate overnight and then any excess oil should be gently wiped away. Do this at least once per year.
Store your cameo jewelry in a clean, dry and secure place when not being worn.

- Hi Jacqueline_K, Great lens . I really enjoyed the articles . I have also created a lens ??.Have you glanced into your local jewelry store lately? Unless there happens to be a major women's gift holiday around the corner, they probably looked a little desolate. "Brick and mortar" jewelry stores seem to be falling on hard times recently, and one contributing factor is the growth of online jewelry auctions sites. click here
