Places of interest in New Zealand

There are many places to visit during a campervan holiday around New Zealand.

Some fantastic coastal towns are dotted throughout NZ and are ideal bases to explore the local sights.

Some can be off the main tourist routes but if you are adventurous and spend some time taking a closer look you will be well rewarded.

Coromandel Peninsula

Whitianga

Whitianga Sun RiseWhitianga is one of the main tourist towns on the Coromandel Peninsula and is an excellent base for travellers to explore the local area.

The town itself is quite small but has a great selection of restaurants, cafes, bars and fast food outlets. A hotel and two local clubs are great places to visit.

The beach and wharf area along the estuary inlet are the main attractions. This is a fishing destination and the local opportunities for fishing are excellent. Travellers wishing to try their hand at catching some of the local seafood delights can take advantage of the many fishing charters available.

For those simply wishing to explore the local marine environment and fabulous coastal scenery can join one of the many charters. A glass bottom boat is available that visits the nearby marine reserve with the opportunity to snorkel in pristine waters full of protected fish species. Other charters specialise in coastal cave visits with specialised pontoon boats ideal for this.

For a leisurely sailing experience don't miss the 65 foot timber yacht built in 1928 - the Windbourne. Setting out daily at 10am this graceful sailing boat will take you on a sailing adventure throughout Mercury Bay.

For the campervan or motorhome traveller there are several caravan parks in and aroung Whitianga to use a base for overnight stays.

Council Parking Restrictions

Whitianga Beach Front ReserveThe Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) has restrictions on where you can park your campervan overnight! Effectively you are only permitted to stay in a paid caravan park overnight.

Parking on local beach front areas, reserves or on the side of the road may result in a fine if the council enforcement officer sees you. The argument put forward by the council is that campers often leave a mess behind. The main objection is obviously the lack of toilet facilities when not in caravan parks and campers not treating the area with respect. Unfortunately this is often the case.

Those travelling in fully equipped motorhomes and deluxe campervans with a shower and toilet onboard feel aggrieved by this restriction as they have their toilet requirements under control. It is a case of the few spoiling it for the many.

If a traveller is going to take the risk and free-park in restricted areas they should ensure they do not leave anything behind and add further fuel to the argument against free-parking.
