Reaching the West Coast...

Hey everyone, my name is Kim Mackay and me and my family are on a campervan tour around Australia! My husband Bruce and our two kids Derek and Jenny started in Brisbane and made our way up the east coast, before driving cross country into the Northern Territory. Now at the top of Western Australia we are making our way to the coast through some very empty countryside! A couple of nights in Halls Creek and now we are going to the tiy settlement of Fitzroy Crossing. There is little to see there bar the Geike Gorge, which we will visit before heading on to Broome. Join us for handy travel hints and some ideas on motorhome travel in the region.

Halls Creek to Fitzroy Crossing

Its a 290 kilometre drive from Halls Creek to Fitzroy Crossing, and a fairly uneventful one at that! We set off early because in the afternoon we wanted to check out the Geikie Gorge, which is about fifteen kilometres north of the town. Famous for its large quantities of barramundi, the gorge is a fishing hotspot and is surrounded by some stunning vegetation. We arrived for a picnic lunch, and Derek got stuck into his fishing.
The most amazing thing about the gorge for me is the population of Johnsons crocodiles that inhabit these waters. These crocs do not grow very big, and have not been known to attack humans. So, although I would never try it myself, you are able to swim amongst the crocodiles in Geike Gorge!
There are camping facilities here, and a number of bushwalks you can take. The bush around the gorge is lovely and thick and full of birds, and some great views of the high sided gorge and the river cutting through it can be seen.
After a pleasant day there we packed it in and drove into Fitzroy Crossing. This town came into being because it was a good place for the Fitzroy River to be crossed, and it hasnt really grown much since. There is not much to recommend, and we really did very little after nosing our campervan into the Fitzroy River Lodge and Caravan Park, which was a pleasant place to stay with all the necessary amenities.
A sound nights sleep, in preparation for the drive to Broome the next day.

Broome- We arrive at the WA coast!

The drive from Fitzroy Crossing to Broome took us about 5 and a half hours, a distance of 390 kilometres. After thousands of kilometres of harsh desert landscape, there was a collective whoop of joy in the camper as the ocean came into view! The presence of the seaside always seems to add a holiday feel to any situation, and suddenly it felt like we were on holiday again, not just on a long drive! And the coastline here is simply gorgeous, with dramatic rocky bluffs punctuating the shiny white sands (and I mean shiny!).
We had booked a spot for our campervan at Roebuck Bay Caravan Park, which is probably the most popular caravan park in Broome because it is the only one situated on a beach. It overlooks Town Beach in Roebuck Bay, and is close to shops and restaurants and the like. We found the range of facilities more than adequate and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Until the late 1980's Broome could only be accessed by a dirt road, and although it has come a long way since then it still has a very remote feel to it. You get the sense that the world is missing out on something special here- it s the sort of place where you would expect to find hordes of foreigners visiting!
Take Cable Beach for example. This is the chief attraction of Broome, and has to be one of the world's premier beaches. It is long and wide, and the water is that bright aqua colour you see on all the travel programs! Sunset is a special time here, as the sun dropping over the ocean casts its orange glow off the white sands, creating a stunning reflection that will have photographers salivating! A favourite activity on the beach is camel tours, and big groups of dromedaries carrying tourists are often seen traversing up and down. The sunset tours are especially popular, and the strange sight of camels on the beach with the sun setting in the background makes a good photo!
There is lots more to see in Broome though. Just out of town lies Gantheaume Point, a rocky headland where 130 million year old dinosaur footprints can be seen when the tide is low. Also here is Anastasia's Pool, which is a perfectly round pool that a former lighthouse keeper built by hand for his wife Anastasia. Its a touching story really- she had arthritis and he built the pool for relief for her.
We are so excited to be in Broome, and will definitely spend a few days looking around. Look at the list below to see a list of all the things we can get up to while here!
