Features Of Most Modern Tents
For Camping And Hiking
Most modern tents are lightweight, compact and durable, providing a surprising amount of space and comfort. Whether you are going it alone in a one man tent or traveling with a partner in a two man tent or getting out and about with the family in a three man or bigger, there is a tent for you out there and you don't have to break the bank to get one.
Just like buying a car, we all look for different features, so below is a list of features that you may want to look out for when deciding to buy a tent for the first time or upgrade your existing one.
- Three Season Tents:
Three season tents are for late spring, summer and early fall outings. At a minimum, they should have lightweight
aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Many premium tents will feature
pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness. - Four Season Tents:
As the name suggests a Four season tent is not only for the late spring, summer and early fall, but for the winter as well, being better to cope with harsher weather. They are often of a dome design, because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow or water can collect. - Free Standing Tents
A free standing tent will stand up on its own, a lot of these do come in a dome design, although they can also be of tunnel design. Many one and two person tents do not come as free standing tents. - Staked Tents:
All other tents that are not free standing will have to be staked to the ground to stand upright. These are sometimes actually lighter as they require fewer poles and can be set up quicker.

How To Choose
It may seem obvious which one you would choose out of the one, two or three person tents, but it is worth thinking about a few options that may factor in your ultimate decision. Also some tips and other things to think about whatever the size you choose.
Consider the following:
- Okay so if you are camping or hiking alone, then it may seem obvious to plump for a one man tent, but consider how much other equipment you carry on your trips. Will a one man tent be to cramped, or would it be worth getting a two man tent and enjoying not fighting for space with your equipemnt.
- If it is a definite that you always hike or camp alone, then may be a one man tent is for you, but consider the fact that you may be joined in the future by a friend or partner and again think about whether a two man tent would be a better investment for the future.
- Camping as a couple is great and a two man tent would be the obvious choice, but if having kids is on your mind then may be it is worth thinking of a bigger three or even four man tent. For now you can enjoy the space, but in the future you will be prepared.
- Whether it be a one, two or three man tent that you are investing in, a little tip is to know your tent before you actually go on a trip and use it. So when you get your tent, set it up at home to make sure that you know how to erect it. This will also give you an idea of how much space you will have and how much other equipment you will be able to take with you.
- Another thing to consider before you invest in your chosen tent is the weight of it. If you are going camping and using your car, then it will not matter to much, but if you are backpacking/hiking, then you will obviously want to get a tent that is not going to break your back with the weight.
- A few other things to look out for are, color coding for easy erection, mesh wall panels for good ventilation, internal storage pockets to keep essentials handy, waterproof taped seams and a full coverage rain fly for a dry experience.
What ever size tent you decide to get, there are many uses for it, from camping holidays or hiking trips, to fishing trips or days on the beach ( don't forget the Barbeque), investing in a good tent will serve you many years enjoyment.
