Camping Fun for Kids - Printable Scavenger Hunt and Kid Fun Packing List

Ranked #210 in Sports & Recreation, #8,275 overall

Plan ahead for a fun time and a great scavenger hunt when camping with kids!

Having a great vacation doesn't just happen on its own. Plan ahead for a fun time camping. My family went camping at camp grounds when I was a kid, and I camp now with my children. Here are some tips for packing what you need for a great time, and a printable scavenger hunt for an afternoon of fun.

Kids need to be entertained - even when on a restful vacation, but it does not take much. A lot of the time, you can tote along some common things you already have, even things you have had forever, and the kids will find new life in them. You will see that when in a different context (such as a campground) those simple things come to life.

Things You May Already Have and Should Pack

When going to a campground, you really do not need to buy much - the things you already have can keep them busy - especially those things that they don't use everyday. Leave the electronics home, and bring out the active and social toys!
  • Jump Rope
  • Balls (all and any kind !)
  • Frisbee
  • Deck of Cards
  • UNO Cards
  • Board Game
  • Printed Scavenger List
  • Bike and Helmet
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Bucket (for caught nature - i.e. salamanders)
  • Coloring Books or Activity Books and Markers (or Crayons)
  • Fishing Pole
  • Remote Control Car or Boat (or helicopter/plane if you have them)
  • Bathing Suits/Towels/Floatables
  • Books (of interest and readable for the kids)
  • Music
  • Magnifying Glass
  • 2 way phones AKA 2 way radios (or walkie talkies) - they are fun, and also provide communication when the kids are away from campsite.
  • Glow Sticks - for fun, but also for safety. With glow sticks on, you can spot your kid in the dark!
  • Sidewalk Chalk (can usually get a pack at the dollar store if you don't have it)
  • Bubbles ! (they never use them at home- but will love them there !)
  • Tonka Trucks

Simple, Classic, Active Toys

You didn't bring them camping just so they could sit in the woods while they play their Nintendo DS, right? The whole point is they they get active in the great outdoors. Simple active toys, often overlooked at home, can be big hits when camping.

3D Woodcraft Projects

Having some things your little ones can do indoors is a good idea in the case of rain. Woodcraft kits like this one are very reasonably priced and require no tools for assembly. They come in flat sheets so they are small to pack, but very impressive once finished. These are good for kids 10 and up, or a little younger if they do a lot of kits with instructions. My boy loves putting together lego sets, so naturally he also loves doing kits like this, and he was able to put together one of the large ship ones almost completely by himself at 8.
