Found your page and am adding it to my Vintage Camper lens... hoping the old gal can make it up there from her home base in Ohio. If so, see you there and happy camping!

I will have to try making my own firestarters. I had never even thought of that. (Go Blue)

Only a few when I was a girl guide as a kid and pathfinder as a teenager. That's it!

I can't wait until it gets warmer to take the kids camping. The Metro Parks around the Detroit Metro area are really nice, too. Great lens!

You've got great ideas and information here. Among my favorite spots for camping are North and South Manitou Islands in Michigan, ( you have to take a ferry from Lelanau) and North point at the tip of the Lelanau Penninsula. :-)

Last weekend friends and I went camping at the Porcupine Mountains State Park. I hadn't been camping in several years but with all the amenities they brought it was more like a rustic hotel. ;)

Remember to bring your own toilet paper. Sometimes the bathrooms or outhouses are empty, and you don't want to be stuck wiping with a pine cone, haha. When we go to sleep at night we usually keep our coolers in the car so the animals can't get to them. Bring rope to tie between trees to hang wet towels and clothing. Pack for any kind of weather, especially in Michigan. It can be really hot during the day, but temperatures and cool down dramatically at night time. You should pack shorts and pants, long sleeve shirts and short sleeves. And be sure to bring some blankets.

We have the same rules with firewood in Minnesota. Nice lens! To keep critters away from your site, wash your dishes away from the campsite. Water used to clean a dirty pan will entice them just as much as the real thing.

This is awesome--I'm loving your Michigan guides!

One of my favorite places to camp in Michigan is Nordhouse Dunes on Lake Michigan. Amazing camping, but it is much more rustic than campgrounds as you have to carry everything in and out and there are no restrooms.
  • schofieldml Apr 11, 2009 @ 11:07 am | delete
I like reading about different places to camp. Michigan looks like a great place to go camping. I will be adding this lens to my Lensroll on a couple of my lenses.

Plenty of interesting and useful information here - good lens, 5-star.

When I'm traveling the United States I'll be sure to consider Michigan as a place to camp!

Also, how well do those Pepsi can stoves work? I've seen a few tutorials on how to make them in various places, but haven't gotten around to trying one myself yet (though i'll be sure to in the future). They're definitely impressive looking, though.

Thanks for this lens. I love camping in Michigan too. I've added two of my favorite camping spots to your list...Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior and North and South Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. I guarantee no Tessies or Tiki Joes at either of these wonderful backcountry camping destinations.
    Love, d

Good work on the lens! We have friends who moved to Michigan, though we've never been there yet to see them. I've built a lens featuring essential gear for overnight hiking trips. Take a look and rate it for me. Thanks! Gary

    11. Apple Cider Vinegar can be used to clean your dishes or hands. It works as a disinfectant
