Looking forward to some wonderful time camping and backpacking for my birthday in a few months. I've bookmarked your excellent guide, in the hopes of finally pulling off a camping trip where we don't realize, once we're in the middle of nowhere, that we've forgotten something :)

Very nice lens, everything you need to know about camping, thank you...
In Puerto Rico we have very nice places for camping, specially some small islands like Culebra, Vieques, Palominitos, and some others

Thank you for all of the time you have spent providing quality information. Nice lens, hopefully I will be able to articulate as well as you, I am just getting started on this Squidoo.

This is a great lens. The only thing I would add to essentials is a good pair of jumping shoes. Once as a kid in Jasper Park in Canada, a black bear charged our camp and I jumped right over the car trunk. Great lens though

I camp a bit, and geocache too, and this lens is excellent. Nice gear and tips on lists and things to be sure to bring. The bin idea, such a low-cost solution, very very good tip there.

You did a fantastic job with this lens, very, very thorough. Thank you.
  • DebMartin Dec 26, 2011 @ 11:49 am | delete
What a totally complete lens. And I love that you are environmentally conscious and do the dishes instead of burning so much stuff. And no plastic. A few years ago I even gave up the plastic trash bags. That really helped me thing about what and how to pack. I like your method of doing dishes and I'm off to find a mesh bag. If you have suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks!

I really love camping and have been doing it since high school.I will bring these equipment for my next camping.great info! :)
  • prhammock Nov 1, 2011 @ 6:47 pm | delete
You do cover a lot of information. I started camping way back, however those camping trips required a lot of hiking (4 hours and up), I learned to travel light and comfortable.

Lengthy but lots of quality information! I'm about to go camping again in a few weeks and can't believe I hadn't considered keeping a pre-packed camping box!

Great and informative read, enjoyed it. The roughing it photo reminded me of our camping trips, we love camping? but we love our comfort as well ;-) I got some great ideas about how to get better organized for my next trip, thanks.

What a fab lens! So much information :)
  • TheHealthGuy Aug 3, 2011 @ 4:38 am | delete
Great lens. When I go camping, always in the mountains where there's a great trout stream, I go pretty lite. My gear consists of my weapons, ammo, axe, e-tool, fly rod and gear, fart sack, first-aid kit, mess kit and coffee pot, tarp, a couple cans of beans incase I forget how to live in the wild, extra socks, skivies, an extra pair of boots, wash cloth and soap, tooth brush, razor, a couple canteens, slicker, coat. I think that's about it and I'm good to go for 2 - 3 weeks.
  • KonaGirl Aug 31, 2011 @ 10:39 am | delete
I have been known to go for a day or two with little more than a fishing pole, and backpack with less gear than you have here, but enough to sustain me for a few days to a week. It is so nice to just get away from the crowds every now and then enjoy the solitude of the ocean or the mountains. Thanks for the comment.

Was checking this out 'cos we are planning to go to Mocambique in October and camping was one option - fortunately, as it turns out, we'll be renting a cottage - I'm not big on roughing it.

This is an awesome lens! Thank you for the detailed information on packing and all the tips!

  • tssfacts Apr 10, 2011 @ 9:03 am | delete
Wow a delightful article and great resource for the newbies and us "oldies" too. You got my camping juicing flowing again. It has been a while since I have been tent camping. Lensrolled to my camping quiz.
  • LifeSculptor Nov 23, 2010 @ 4:03 am | delete
Wow! Great lens. Really comprehensive with loads of ideas. I think if I bought toasting forks for the marshmallows the kids wouldn't like it though, one of the highlights when we arrive at a campsite is trying to find sticks long enough to toast them on!
    Thank you.
  • WriterBuzz Sep 30, 2010 @ 6:07 am | delete
This is a great lens. Thanks for making it. Very informative. I gave you a thumbs up

    cause I like your lens.
  • Ladyclodine Jul 17, 2010 @ 3:13 am | delete
An Electric Can Opener is way more better than a hand can opener since it would open any size of can without any force..
  • Haplo32 Jun 30, 2010 @ 7:24 pm | delete
I agree that a camping shower is great on camping trips. At around 1 pound, It's so light that you can easily carry it with you on hiking trips and it won't add much to the weight of your existing gear.
  • World-Wanderer Nov 6, 2009 @ 5:56 pm | delete
Amazing lens, Really great information... (hehe i might borrow a few ideas) but for the axe, Gransfur Brooks make much much much better ones than the one you endorse...
  • MarkDale Mar 2, 2009 @ 10:51 pm | delete
Great lens! I stumbled across this while looking for something else and ended up reading the whole thing and bookmarking it. I love the lists, and your section about taking care of cast iron is right on the money. Very useful stuff!
Have a look at my new hibachi grills site if you get the chance.

You're right. Camping as a child gave me some wonderful memories. All summer long we would go camping almost every weekend. I loved it...still do.
