You have some fantastic ideas here that could be brought indoors after the camping trip when the little campers want to "play camping". Just another idea! I'm developing a camping themed classroom for next year (and having all kinds of fun making a lens about it), and it sounds like we have similar ideas of outdoor fun! :)

We don't have children, much less grandchildren, and Harmony, the tabby, isn't too keen on camping, so I've got nothing (but respect) for you! Great lens!

Taking the grandkids with us can be a challenge because they are so active and want to play all the time. I would love it if they would sit still enough to read a book or knitting like I do but that is asking for too much. LOL

So these camping activities are great options for parents.

how would u pack that stuff????????????????
  • luvmyludwig Apr 22, 2012 @ 7:07 pm | delete
packing entertainment for a toddler is at the top of the priority list. we have a mini van, it's pretty easy for us.

A few of things I always loved during camping, singing campfire songs, roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, fetching sticks for the fire, and going on "adventures" in the trees.

    that is so...true

I miss camping. I have not done it for years. I need to do something about it
  • BalanceByDesign Jul 12, 2011 @ 9:39 pm | delete
We love to camp with our grandchildren. Another idea is to have an age appropriate scavenger hunt.
  • amberchina May 14, 2012 @ 8:09 pm | delete
Great idea! The could find all kinds of nature items...maple leaves, different shapes or types of rocks, worms...just not poison ivy! ;-)

Great lens! I love camping, and now that I have a kid, these suggestions will definitely come in handy. Well, in a couple years. Thanks!
  • tssfacts May 10, 2011 @ 8:30 am | delete
Great advice. I have many fond memories of camping (from a preteen) up to adulthood. Lensrolling to camping quiz.

Still haven't gone camping. Have a 2 and 1 year old! They would love collecting stuff and so many of these other great activities!

When I took my kids camping, they did the junior ranger program (my little guy needed a lot of help). My little guy likes throwing rocks in the river too.

Great ideas! Sometimes I see parents camping with little ones, and they don't seem to be interacting with them other than to scold, feed, or keep them corralled. I'd much rather see them doing this kinds of activities with their small children, fostering a love of the outdoors at any early age because they'll associate camping with fun and quality time with the adults.

We used to do some of this things when our kids were really young! Adding to my camping lens. :)
  • Norma_Budden Apr 23, 2010 @ 5:14 pm | delete
A Frisbee or Badminton set also makes a great addition when camping, especially for older members in your camping party. Children enjoy picnics, too, so it's always nice to plan a few.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. We are going camping for the first time with our 2 year old AND our 2 dogs. These suggestions, really helped me with thinking about what to pack.

Thank you for the great website reference! We just started camping with our 2 year old and we love it...mosquitos, dirt and all. If you have any other child friendly camping websites to share we would really appreciate it.

    Thanks!

Sounds great. Our son is 9 months old, so we're not camping yet, but maybe soon!

Great suggestions for toddlers camping; my daughter is taking my two grandsons camping this summer and I'm going to pass these along to her. Thanks.

I loved your ideas of things to do with a Toddler. I did these same things with our son. We camped out in the backyard mostly since my husband isn't a camper. You are making some treasured memories for your precious children.

Now I can't wait to go camping with my son! Thanks for sharing these great ideas. I've rolled this to some of my parenting lenses. * * * * *

Great suggestions! My only thought is to include discussion and modeling of appropriate outdoor ethics (e.g. pick up your trash, be careful with fire, etc.).
Check out the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics for more information (and they have a GREAT youth program, called Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids [PEAK] - it's great!): http://www.lnt.org/programs/peak.php

Great ideas - I loved camping as a child and still do!

I would suggest you to add recommendations for protecting kids skin from weather and insects! But, in all - I love your suggestions! :)
