All backpackers can attest to this fact: backpacking can be an addicting activity. But unlike other addictions, this one is healthy. Not only will you be able to immerse yourself on the exquisite beauty of Mother Nature, you will also be able to get all the physical exercise you need to stay in top shape.

Yes, it can be physically demanding, dangerous and exhausting. But once you've tried it, it's just so easy to fall in love with backpacking. To ensure you have a first time backpacking adventure that will make you look forward for more, here are some practical beginner tips for you to follow:
1. Go backpacking with a buddy or in a group. Solo backpacking is already very risky even for a seasoned backpacker so it's best to have some buddies with you when you go on your first backpacking adventure.

2. Bring a compass, map and the ability to use this equipment. Even if you have a complete set but if you don't know how to use them, it is useless. Practice using the compass at home and familiarize yourself with the map even before you go backpacking.
3. Pack all the necessary camping equipment and personal items such as tents, lanterns, flashlight, sleeping bag, heater, clothing, matches, first aid kit and many others. Make a comprehensive checklist so that you do not forget anything.

4. Bring sufficient food and water. Trail mixes and energy bars as well as meals that are easy to cook and prepare are the ideal kinds of food to bring in your backpacking trip. You also need sufficient water to keep yourself hydrated. It's a good idea to carry iodine tables to use for purifying water and make it safe for drinking in case you run out of water.
5. Go lightweight. Because of the nature of the activity, it is a good idea to pack lightweight versions of camping gear that are specifically designed for a backpacker. For example, there are tents and backpacks that are made of lightweight materials that will make carrying easier and more manageable.

6. Prepare yourself physically. Obviously, backpacking is a physically strenuous activity so you need to make sure you are fit enough to endure the activity. Engage in physical exercise weeks before the trip. You do not need to enroll in a gym or in an aerobics class, simply going jogging around town can build your strength and stamina.
7. Inform people of your whereabouts. Before you leave for the trip, make sure you let someone back home know the route you and your friends are going to and the expected time of your return. This way, in case you get lost, rescue will immediately be on the way.

8. Learn some survival skills. Knowing which plants are edible and how to make fire using sticks and stones can prove to be useful in your backpacking adventure.
Backpacking does not need to be a dangerous sport. With safety precautions in mind and a common sense to distinguish what's safe from not, this activity can definitely be a safe and exciting one.

Ah, the great outdoors! Nothing would be better to wash away a long working week's stress than taking in a lungful of the woods' unsullied breath.
