Camping is a fun experience that you can do with the whole family. It is also a cheap and healthy way to get out of the house, and have a break from reality, take a holiday. However, you need to be equipped. One of the most important pieces of equipment, that every camper should have is a camping lantern . Camping lanterns come in many different styles, and there are heaps of pros and cons to each model. There are three types that you can choose from. The battery operated lantern, gas fueled, or the liquid fueled lantern. You can also just take a conventional candle if you wanted!

Probably the most important thing you want to think about is safety. Many families will take their children with them camping, and safety then becomes the most important factor. In this case, battery operated are the best choice, the safest of the four, as there is no open flame. You can have them around children and pets and not be worried that they will be knocked over and start a fire. As long as the battery is going, there will be light. However, the disadvantage is that it is not as bright as the other lanterns, and as the battery starts to lose some power, the light does not shine as bright.

Another important consideration is the length of use that you will get out of the camping lantern. Battery lanterns have been established as the safest, however, they are limited by their power to run the whole night. On the other hand, liquid fueled lanterns can go the whole night. With an added advantage of giving off heat and keeping the campsite warm, as they can get pretty cold! However, as always there are cons, and an open flame is present in this model, which compromises safety. They can also be quite noisy.

The next thing that is thought of when looking at camping lanterns, is convenience. Gas lanterns are generally the most convenient because they burn very brightly and they use the same fuel as the average camping stove, which most campers will have. They are however a little bit heavier than the other models This isn't great for traveling, but means in winter and windy conditions, they will not be knocked over.

As you can see, there are many advantages and disadvantages of all the styles of lanterns. It depends on the style of camper you are. If you take kids, then the battery camping lantern is the way to go, there is no heat given off, and no open flame, which means its really safe. However, if you are camping without kids and want to save money, and have great light all the time, then a gas fueled lantern may be the one for you.
