Writing your own songs is a fascinating subject, there are no hard and fast rules but structure, harmony and melody can be very important, it's not all about lyrics. I find personally that if I love the lyrics it kind of means so much more.

Who cannot love Gilbert O'Sullivan's lyrics, what about Billy Joel, UB40 and Squeeze... listen to the YouTube videos I've added, I promise to add some more current artists soon... lol
There are a few songs actually that I love, connect with another wilder side of me, without knowing all the lyrics and perhaps this will show the appeal of a song per se, after all, songwriting isn't just lyric writing, Nirvana, Kings of Leon, Rihanna... fantastic songs, check out the Youtube videos on these too. Wow how diverse is my taste lol!
I guess all this is just things for you to think about, what you want to achieve, are you writing for someone else, is lyric writing your thing, or melody writing? Do you want the whole package, singer songwriter and superstar? You need to define what you want before you start on the long hard road to success, one thing you can be sure of is nothing will happen without hard work. Having said that, you can choose to get as much information and help as you can and speed up the process, lazy people will be left behind.
Once you know exactly what you want, it becomes much easier to focus, and ask and find what you need. It's hard to ask people questions when you don't feel you know what you are talking about. But guess what, if you know what you want, you do know what you are asking! They have to answer your wants, or point you elsewhere, or do nothing, you can't lose!
I've written some pretty weird lyrics, never quite got it right. I've written lots of songs with the help of my trusty yamaha keyboard lol, I always found it helpful to get a rhythm of some sort going and work with that, probably a lack of confidence in myself there. I will always remember rehearsing with friends at local church halls and being boosted by their support and words of thanks for the arrangements that I did.
Write down everything, some snippets will help further on down the road, whether it's to rhyme with something else or to add a different angle/slant/feeling, the human mind is amazing and flashes of inspiration are fleeting. Trust yourself and be confident, we've had Ant Music and I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt, do you think they cared if it was different at the time? ermm I don't think so. Just do it.
