What is a wormery?
A wormery is a custom build worm house with the purpose of keeping worms in order to create compost from plant matter, normally kitchen scraps. This lens talks about a CAN O WORMS which is the particular type of wormery that I have used and had great fun with. I hope to share some of the ups and downs, and pros and cons of worms, wormeries and my only particular can o worms wormery.
Can-O-Worms Wormery Enrich More Than Soil
Overall I feel everyone should have a worm bin in their home. I actually keep mine right in my kitchen. This will allow me easy access to the can o worms and contain my kitchen messes. The Can-O-Worms can get heavy once it becomes heavily used, therefore I recommend putting the can on some type of dolly or easily moveable product.
If you are anything like me you are a little disturbed by having rotten vegetables and worms in your kitchen. Do not let the oddity of a wormery keep you from enjoying the benefits of having one. Over the last several months I have been very fascinated with how my wormery is working. With every piece of vegetable I compost the transformation from rotten to rich wonderful soil is nothing short of a miracle in my eyes. I have learned to appreciate my hard working worms and all they are doing for my house plants.
With that being said do not expect instant results. It takes a while for the Can-O-Worms to work up the numbers and the vegetable compost. Don't think the first month or two will go to waste as your wormery grows. While you wait to enrich the soils of you garden you can enjoy the benefits of what is called "worm tea." My plants love it! By leaving your spigot on the Can-O-Worms the vessel under your wormery will collect the "tea." When I notice a nice pile up of the worm tea I use it mixed with water to enhance my indoor plants or seedlings.
One of the down sides I noticed was an odor coming from the wormery. It made sense as there were decaying vegetables on my kitchen counter, but this is not something I was thrilled about. I had moved the can to the garage for a little while but started to notice I was not using it as much as I did when it was on the counter. I tried putting an air freshener by the can but it still had a bit of a smell to it. By doing a bit of research I learned that by adding a little bit of parsley stems, or celery to my compost the smell would turn sweet and would not be considered an "odor" anymore. This seems to be doing the trick.
By using Can-O-Worms I have been able to help the environment in a small way. With a recycled sturdy can I have been able to produce soil to grow my family fresh fruits and vegetables. In turn I then reuse my fruit and vegetables to repeat the process. All this and my children have grown attached to and remain amazed at the dedication of our worms. Having a Can-O-Worms has been an enlighten experience for my whole family.

Amazon Spotlight Personal Review
Why this Can O Worms wormery instead of any other?
Can O Worms 00300 Composting Bin
Amazon Price: $129.99 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
I have personally used this Can O Worms, and am very happy with how it works. There are loads of wormeries on the market, but I personally can recommend this one. I also find from an aesthetic point of view, that I like the look of the round one as opposed to the square one as my Can O Worms lives inside.
