Walk to Cana Island

On our visit to Door County, Wisconsin we stayed at a lodge in Bailey's Harbor. I had seen information that there were several lighthouses in the area and I was hoping to get to see them or at least photograph them from a distance. I wasn't sure how I would get to the lighthouse at Cana Island, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that when the tide is down you can walk right out to the island.

This lens will show the photographs that I took on Cana Island and provide some information about the lighthouse.

Cana Island Lighthouse Tower

taken as I was approaching the island.

Cana Island is a 8.7 acre island. Actually it is only an island when the levels of Lake Michigan are high. At the present time it is linked to the mainland by a rocky channel that can be walked across.

We found Cana Island by going on Hwy Q north of Baileys Harbor and following the signs to the island.

The day we arrived was rather cloudy and the area was in a drought. It was a dry August, so you will notice that the grass in the photos below is very brown.

This is a photo that I took as I was approaching the island on the rocky causeway.

Keepers House and Lighthouse Tower

front shot

The Cana Island lighthouse was first lit in 1870. It has a 3rd order Fresnal lens. The light was automated in 1945.

The lighthouse and tower were made of cream colored city brick. In 1902 the tower was beginning to deteriorate and it was then covered with a steel clading to protect it from further deterioration.

The tower is 89 feet tall and there are 102 stairs to the top of the light.

Climbing the Cana Island Lighthouse

video of lighthouse climb

This great little video shows the climb up the Cana Island Lighthouse. From the top you have a wonderful view of the shoreline and the lighthouse grounds.

The lighthouse wasn't open for climbing when i visited so I was glad to find this recent video of the climb.

Enjoy!
