Canadian Art Calendars 2012

Vancouver Art gallery has an extensive collection of Canadian art and has sought to portray its diversity and vigor in the choice of artwork for this calendar

The artists whose work is included in this calendar include:
* landscape painters Jean Paul Lemieux, Emily Carr, Maurice Cullen, Charles Hepburn Scott, J. E. H. MacDonald, William Percival Weston, Jock Macdonald, and Clark McDougall;
* Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak;
* expressionist Jack Shadbolt;
* abstractionist Gary Lee-Nova; and
* Haida artist Robert Davidson.

This engagement calendar presents 32 paintings by Franklin Carmichael, A. J. Casson, Lawren S. Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley.

The Art Gallery of Ontario has chosen what they think are twelve outstanding Group of Seven paintings to create this compact and colorful wall calendar.

The Artists represented are Franklin Carmichael, A. J. Casson, Lawren S. Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley.

* J. E. H. MacDonald's Garden, Thornhill,

* and eight other superb works by Franklin Carmichael, Lawren S. Harris, Arthur Lismer, and Tom Thomson.

In The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson, author Anne Newlands explores the ambitions and visions of the artists, capturing the cultural and historical realities of their time and bringing to life their artistic response to the Canadian wilderness.

The book is illustrated with 40 color works of landscapes, portraits and urban scenes, as well as black and white archival photographs. Readers are introduced to the artists as well as their locations -- turn-of-the-century Toronto, Ontario's wilderness, the Rocky Mountains and the Arctic.

This wall calendar includes 12 landscapes of Canada's northern wilderness by Thom Thomson - a prominent artist and member of Canada;s famous Group of Seven

Born in 1877, Tom Thomson grew up in Ontario near the shores of Georgian Bay. In 1912, he made the first of many trips to Algonquin Park, the setting of his great paintings and the place where he died in a tragic canoe accident five years later. Thomson's magnificent legacy is revealed through the changing moods and seasonal colors of his paintings.

Tom Thomson's exploratory artistic style and his appreciation of untamed nature helped shape the style of the Group of Seven. Thomson (1877-1917) created hundreds of oil paintings-many of them completed in only a few hours-which remain masterpieces of Canadian art.

The twelve images in this calendar are After the Sleet Storm; Autumn Woods, Algonquin Park; Cliff by the Lake; Evening, Canoe Lake; Northern Lights; Open Water, Joe Creek; Path Behind Mowat Lodge; Petawawa, Algonquin Park; Pink Birches; Spring Woods; Spruce and Tamarack; and Winter Thaw in Woods.

Group of Seven member Lawren S. Harris (1885-1970) is identified as having been responsible for the formation of the Canadian group of Seven

His paintings reflect a stylised approach to the painting of the lakes and mountains of the Canadian landscape

British Columbia's wilderness and First Nations culture formed the two great themes in the work of Emily Carr (1871-1945). Through her landscapes and haunting depictions of totems, she is deservedly considered the premier painter of Canada's Pacific Coast.

Twelve of Emily Carr's remarkable works are included in this calendar for 2012 including Totem Forest, A Rushing Sea of Undergrowth, and Maud Island, Q.C.I.

This is a perpetual calendar is based on 1909 and a year in the life of Emily Carr (1871-1945) and her faithful companion - her dog Studio Billy.

Carr is one of Canada's best-known painters and in 1909 she was running a a painting studio in Victoria, where she gives lessons to students and paints her own works.

She was well-known for her love of animals and had a special friendship with Studio Billie. In 1909, she wrote a brief account of each month from Billie's perspective and drew a picture to go with it. You may recognize one or two of the drawings in this calendar, but Studio Billie's Calendar presents the whole thing for the first time.

About 1,200 miles north of Toronto, Dorset Island is home to a multigenerational community of artists who work each winter in the Kinngait printmaking studios of Cape Dorset, producing unique and powerful images that express the enduring Inuit culture.

This calendar includes 12 exciting and colourful Inuit prints from the cooperatively owned Kinngait studios. Most of the prints are recent releases.
