What's going on in the insurance market these days?

Critical illness is nothing one would want to get closely acquainted with. But since the potential of becoming ill can hardly be removed wholly, it's imperative that we take precautions.

Critical Illness Insurance

Only then, you are able to make important financial decisions. Finding the right insurance deal now - while you are healthy - is a good way to make up for parts of the unforeseen costs that could be induced by a critical illness. And that is why there are over half a million critical illness policies to be found across Canada.

But life-and-death circumstances are not the only things that policyholders should consider. Even if one surpasses the originally estimated elimination period, the insurance company may take time to verify the reliability of the claim. One of the actions undertaken, for example, is the attestation of the fact that the claimant wasn't aware of the illness at the time of the initial application.

Automatic Increase Benefit Rider

The latest news is that a select number of Critical Illness insurers in Canada bring forward what is called an automatic increase benefit rider. This rider boosts the policy's critical illness benefit at planned times. Naturally, the premiums also swell accordingly.

RBC Insurance, for one, gives its customers an Automatic Increase Benefit Rider, allowing the client to raise their policy benefit once every two years.

What is more, on each of the first 5 increases, the client can inflate his or her coverage without proof of insurability. The increase amount will be 20% of the original critical illness benefit. This means that customers can boost their coverage to 200% within 10 years.

Be aware that when we say that the RBC increases to the critical illness benefit are automatic, it means that they can not be rescheduled or put aside. In case the insured refuses an increase, the add-on automatically terminates, while previously accepted increases will still be effective.

Other News and Resources

Steering away from coverage increases, Canada Life is the single company that draws a distinction between pipe and cigar smokers when underwriting in that it considers cigar and pipe smokers as non-smokers on critical illness and disability plans. This fact will have a large impact on the final pricing.
