Stamp Collecting For Canadians

Information About Canadian Postage Stamps

I have been an avid collector of Canadian stamps in mint and used condition for many years and I am always on the look out for the latest stamps issued by Canada Post. I have found one of the best and most reliable ways of increasing and expanding my personal collection is buying stamps on eBay.

I have a weakness for the souvenir sheets issued each year and try to get several of each set of stamps. What I do is hang on to the extras and doubles that I own and later sell them on eBay myself when they are no longer available from the Post Office. This will not make you rich, but you can easily sell your stamps for a profit. Basically by selling the excess mint stamps I can make money and keep those that I want for my own stamp collection pretty much at no charge. With the extra money I receive from my sales of stamps I purchase more stamps, although I do keep an eye on the older mint stamp auctions for great deals.

Like I said, you can buy and sell stamps on eBay and make some money and grow your collection. Over time your collection of mint stamps will continue to increase in value and there's always the option of selling some of them on eBay. This page will display a small sample of all the Canadian mint stamps available - both brand new and those from the earliest issues as they become available at auction. The stamps offered will likely change on a daily basis, so feel free to come back at any time.

Stamp Condition: Factors Involved In Valuing Stamps

Stamps are usually collected in either used or unused condition. Stamps that are unused or mint, usually carry a premium over those that have been used as postage.

Beyond whether a stamp has been used or not, there are 5 basic factors which help determine the value that can be assigned to a given stamp. The gum on the back used to adhere to letters and postage; the colour of the stamp - whether it has deep colour or faded or washed out; the paper used to create the stamp; if the design on the stamp has proper centering or drifts off the edge of the stamp; and any cancellation (heavy or light cancellation and legibility).

All five of these factors play important roles in determining the value of a stamp. Stamps are assigned the following Grades based on how they score in relation to those factors. The Grades are:

VF - Very Fine
F - Fine
VG - Very Good

Get A Copy Of The Unitrade Catalog Of Canadian Stamps

Knowing the value of the stamps you already own and those you are considering purchasing is obviously vital. One of the best and most reliable stamp catalogs is the UNITRADE SPECIALIZED CATALOG OF CANADIAN STAMPS that are issued each year. They can be purchased directly from Canada Post or eBay. You may not think that owning older versions of stamp catalogs is a wise investment, but the older catalogs begin to become collectable themselves plus they give you some idea of stamp values in the past.

Not only does the price you might be willing to buy or sell stamps rely on your knowledge of what the value of mint and used stamps are today and last year, but whether that stamp has increased in value over the past ten or twenty years. You will be able to determine the ebb and flow of the prices paid and what the values could possibly be in 10-15 years when you want to sell some of your collection.

Plus, variations and errors are fairly completely shown in the Unitrade catalogs as well as full descriptions of the stamps, how they were made, how many were issued and all sorts of invaluable details that make stamp collecting such an enjoyable hobby. There are usually excellent color pictures of each and every stamp issued from the 1800s to the present, which obviously helps if you are uncertain which stamp you are looking at. Having a number of these guides will help give you a more informed advantage when considering obtaining stamps for your collection.

The 1897 Diamond Jubilee Stamps Of Canada

1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Stamps Issued By Canada

For the 60th Anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation, Canada issued 16 stamps all identically designed with two pictures of Victoria past and present, but each denomination having a different color.

According the the 2009 Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps, buying a complete set of Canada Diamond Jubilee stamps in mint very fine never hinged condition would cost approximately $34,470.00. A little more than I am able to spend, but you can wish.

Issued as follows:

Half Cent - black
One Cent - light orange
Two Cents - green
Three Cents - bright rose
Five Cents - deep blue
Six Cents - yellow brown
Eight Cents - dark violet
Ten Cents - brown violet
Fifteen Cents - steel blue
Twenty Cents - vermillion
Fifty Cents - ultramarine
One Dollar - lake (purplish-rose)
Two Dollars - dark purple
Three Dollars - yellow blistre
Four Dollars - purple
Five Dollars - olive green

The higher denominations are extremely hard to come by and command a lot of attention if they come to auction. The smaller denominations are much easier to collect, but still they can cost a pretty penny based on their condition, how centered the image is, and very importantly, if the stamps were hinged at one time or another.

The half cent stamp was black and is shown below.

1897 One Cent Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee

One of the stamps I have several of all stashed away is the One Cent Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee stamp. Usually with a lighter orange color, with about 8 million issued. You can usually expect to pay around $30 for a Very Fine example of this stamp. If non-hinged, expect a premium to be applied.

1897 Two Cents Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee

The green Two Cent stamp from the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee series had a production of 2.5 million stamps printed. A Very Fine mint Two Cent stamp would cost you about $50 or so.

Loading

1897 Three Cents Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee

The bright rose Three Cent stamp from the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee series had a production of 20 million stamps printed. It was a very well used stamp. A Very Fine mint Three Cent stamp could cost you about $20 but there are usually deals to be had if you look at what's available. More of course if the stamp was mint and unhinged - meaning it had never had a hinge attached to the back of the stamp for display in a stamp album. Many collectors prefer purchasing older stamps without hinging as hinges could distroy some stamps and take away from the visual beauty.

Large Queens Versus Small Queens

type=text

The Large Queens were originally issued from 1868 until 1976 when they were superseded by the Small Queens issues. The Small Queens were in use from 1870 until 1883.

Purchasing the ten mint stamps that make up the Large Queen set would cost about $10,000-$15,000 depending upon condition. The costs involved in acquiring examples of each stamp in the best mint non-hinged condition would be significantly more expensive. If you are considering trying to put a decent collection of the Large Queens, you should as always, look to the smaller denominations which can be purchased online by auction. Right now just the Half Cent Large Queen would be available in Very Fine unused condition for as much as $125. In Fine condition, the price drops to about $60 or so. A Very Good Half Cent in unused condition would still cost you around $30. Even a postally used Very Fine example of the Half Cent Large Queen would be about $125.

Prices like that make you wonder what you would have paid 5-10 years ago for these same stamps. Although prices for Canadian stamps remains relatively calm, over time there is usually a constant increase in the value of the very best stamps.

It has been a while since I looked at stamps and stamp collection, this has brought up some very good memories. Thanks for this lense....

Thank you for putting together a nice lens on philately. This new 10$ stamp is going to be hard to find in VF used condition! When my family is going to send me my Christmas parcel here in France I am going to ask them to put it on the parcel, hoping it won't get damage.

Yeah, I like that new one too. I was so concerned about grabbing a mint one I hadn't thought about the used ones. Lots of the high value stamps don't get used very often and getting one with a clear stamp, not munched during transit WILL be hard to acquire.

This was one of my Father's hobbies back in the 70s. It got sidelined when other things demanded more of his time, but it was interesting to sort though on a cold winter's day.
  • Bradshaw Oct 10, 2010 @ 1:27 pm | delete
I do that too. I pull out my collection and go through the stamp catalogs and see what they're worth these days. I always seem to find one or two that I forgot that I had - and then notice a glaring ommission in my collection and I'm back at it again. Really a great hobby.
  • aesta1 Oct 5, 2010 @ 7:59 pm | delete
This is a great hobby. I wish I can do something with all the stamps we have. Right now, we are seldom home and so we don't really have the time to organize them.
  • Bradshaw Oct 5, 2010 @ 11:30 pm | delete
I have the same problem. I get new and used stamps coming in all the time and they get put away for a later date. Your best bet would be to gather them all together and try to sort them out. Just put the ones you like in one pile and the ones you don't like in another. See if any are listed here and you might be able to see if they're worth anything. Although, I have stamps from letters received from friends and relatives that although they have little monetary value, are valuable to me.

From one proud Canadian to another..keep up the good work! Interesting collection of stamps..love to see the older ones like from "War time"..

I will be adding the older ones too. I have some mint Queen Victoria stamps all the way up to the latest present. Incomplete of course, but it's growing. Yes, definitely, there's room on this page to showcase the older stamps too.
