My Collection of Old Canadian Cookbooks

I have a variety of old Canadian Cookbooks by Canadian Living, Chatelaine, Company's Company, Purity, Blue Ribbon Spices, and Laura Secord. I hadn't realized that some have been reproduced and are considered collectible cookbooks. Many of my old cookbooks are also out-of-print but can still be found at used bookstores online.

I remember my first cookbook was by Laura Secord that I bought in a Laura Secord Chocolate Shop in Vancouver, BC. I was attending college at the time (in 1975) and I see the price sticker on the back of the cookbook says $2.79. My favorite light shortbread recipe, made from berry sugar, is from my Laura Secord cookbook. It has become a family tradition to use this shortbread recipe at Christmastime.

After I was married, I started subscribing to the Canadian Living Magazines in the late 1970s. I bought my first Canadian Living cookbook after trying many of the recipes in the magazines. The original Canadian Living cookbook is one cookbook that has not been reprinted but it is still available from some online booksellers. Some of my favorite recipes include Old Fashioned Sage and Celery Dressing and the Basic Pastry recipe.

I hope you will enjoy learning more about a few Canadian Cookbooks that are now available to be enjoyed and treasured by future generations. I have included some of my own favorite Canadian Cookbooks as well as reprinted or reproduced editions of old historical cookbooks. Many of these Canadian Cookbooks would make great gifts for collectors and historians of old cookbooks.

~~Essential cookbook in your collection~~
"I purchased this cookbook about 25 years ago. This book showed me how to make the perfect apple pie using brown sugar. It showed me how to make wonderful popovers and lemon bread which my family loves. My daughters use my well-worn edition for stuffing and sauce recipes. If you only have one cookbook, this should be the one"!!!
~~My Favorite Cookbook~~
"I have an original edition, falling apart from 25 years of use, and am delighted to find it reprinted. This book taught me to cook from scratch and is my primary basic cookbook. I especially like the sections depicting various cuts of meat and fowl, with roasting guidelines, as well as preparation instructions for that venison or other game your hunter friend brings by. Recipes are easy to follow and they all taste good. The pie crust, biscuit, pancake, blueberry muffin and butter cake recipes are family staples and the recipe for pumpkin nut waffles alone is worth the price of this book".

~~The Best Cookbook~~
"I purchased this book for my wife because she has the original from the 70s. it is so worn out and has pages missing because it gets used so much. the recipes are the best period".
~~The All New Purity Cookbook~~
"This is a really good cookbook, very basic. If you have no other cookbook, you could get along very well with just this one. A lot of historical perspective, and very basic cooking techniques."
~~Superior Cookbook~~
"I purchased this cookbook way back when I could order it from Canada (around the 1970's). They are old-fashion recipes with down home cooking".

Customer Reviews:
"Canadian Cookbooks -
I ordered Kate Aitken's Canadian Cook Book, for a friend of mine, his Mother had used this cookbook for many years, when he was growing up. Many of the recipes were favourites of his and so I ordered a copy.. He used it Christmas morning to make his family pancakes, using dear Kate's standby recipe, the pancakes were a hit with everyone and just as delicious as he remembered from his childhood. I love to cook myself and Kate's book is easy to read and understand, lots of really basic good old fashioned almost hand-me-down family recipes".
"A source of inspiration -
Even if you may have to convert to metric system to realize the recipes" :)
"Remembering -
A version of this cookbook has been in my family for several generations. It was "THE" item to give to new brides when my mother was married and I believe my grandmother gave one to all of us. I ordered my copies to pass along to my children...My son is even using it because it is easy to understand the methods. I truly have a memory with every recipe".
