The History of Norwich City Football Club

Norwich City Football club was officially formed in 1902. Their original nickname was the Mustardmen as the famous brand Colman's was based in Norwich City Centre and they played in a distinct yellow colour. Norwich City moved to Carrow Road from "The Nest" in 1935 and still is their home ground today.

After a good start at their new home ground, Carrow Road the league was suspended due to World War II but restarted in 1946. Following a poor decade the club then went on to win their first trophy 1959/60 season guided by Ron Ashman, defeating Rochdale 4-0 on aggregate in a two legged final to in the League Cup.

Norwich finally won the division in 1971/72 season under manager Ron Saunders and made their first appearance at Wembley Stadium in 1973, losing the League Cup Final to Tottenham Hotspur.

John Bond was appointed as manager and once again guided them to the League Cup Final, this time loosing to Aston Villa. John Bond resigned during the 1980/81 season and the club were relegated, but bounced back the following season finishing third.

The 1984/85 season saw mixed fortunes for the Canaries. Under Ken Brown's management they reached the final of the Milk Cup at Wembley Stadium having defeated derby rivals Ipswich Town in the Semi Finals. Norwich City were also denied their first opportunity to play in Europe following the ban on English clubs after the Heysel Stadium Disaster.

The Canaries bounced back to top flight immediately by winning the Second Division in the 1985/86 season. High League places in 1986/87 season and 1988/89 would have been enough for UEFA Cup qualification but the ban on English clubs remained.

The History of Norwich City Football Club continued

The English Premier League was established in 1992/93 season. Norwich City led the league up to the final weeks of the season, which resulted in the Canaries finishing third. The following season, Norwich City played in the UEFA Cup for the very first time but were knocked out in the third round.

In January 1994 John Deehan was appointed as manager, under his reign Norwich City finished twelfth in the 1993/94 season and were relegated to the First Division the following season, shortly before relegation John Deehan resigned and was replaced by his assistant: Gary Megson until the end of the season.

Martin O'Neil who had taken Wycombe Wanderers to the second division with successive promotions was appointed Norwich City's new manager in the summer of 1995. He lasted six months in the job before resigning after a dispute with Chairman Robert Chase over money to strengthen the squad. Soon after, chase stepped down after protests from supporters who complained he sold Norwich City's best players and was to blame for their relegation.

In 1996 Delia Smith and her husband took over the majority of Norwich Ciy's shares and re-appointed Mike Walker as The Canaries new manager. He was unable to repeat his previous success and was sacked two season's later with Norwich City mid table in the First Division.

Nigel Worthington was appointed manager and after two unsuccessful years, narrowly avoiding relegation led The Canaries to The Playoff Finals at the Millennium Stadium were they lost to Birmingham City on Penalties.

The 2003/04 Season Norwich won the First Division Title, finishing eight points clear and returned to the Premier League for the first time since 1995. However, despite beating Manchester United and Newcastle United Norwich City were relegated to the First Division once more. Hopes of bouncing straight back up to The Premier League were crushed when The Canaries finished ninth. Results of the 2006/07 season led to mounting pressure on Manager Nigel Worthington , culminating in his sacking in October 2006.

Norwich held a press conference to reveal Norwich city's former player Peter Grant as the new Manager. Grant's side struggled for most of the season and left the club by mutual consent in October 2007 and was replaced by Newcastle United's former Manager Glenn Roeder.

On The Ball City

The first Known Football Chant

Kick it off, throw it in, have a little scrimmage,
Keep it low, a splendid rush, bravo, win or die;
On the ball, City, never mind the danger,
Steady on, now's your chance,
Hurrah! We've scored a goal.
