Bald Is Beautiful: Help Conquer Kids' Cancer!

"One of every five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. Thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and though the number of children who are cured is greater than it was 20 years ago, the loss of one child is one too many."

"Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States."

Julia, 17. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia -- In treatment.
One of five St. Baldrick's Foundation 2011 Ambassador Kids.

"Only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research."
(stbaldricks.org)

StBaldrick's Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer-driven charity that organizes fundraising events and grants money for cancer research. People donate their locks to be sold for wig-making and thus to help raise money for cancer research. The shaving is actually filmed live and the videos uploaded on the 'net, to help raise cancer-awareness.

No, we're not asking you to shave your head!
(On the other hand -- would you?)

As Kelly says (and I believe many of you embrace the same principle),

There is no time like the present!

Who Is Kelly McCausey...

And why you should listen to her

Kelly McCauseyKelly McCausey is an internet marketer, podcaster and home business coach. She is passionate about helping other moms cut their learning curve and create profitable online businesses. (ladypens.com)

Kelly has been working from home since 2002 - first trying to make some extra money to help her family, then as a full-time online entrepreneur (2006). As a business coach, it has been her greatest pleasure to work with other moms, helping them to achieve their goals of being home with their kids while still contributing to family finances and reaching for their own dreams.

Kelly's first labour of love was WHAMTalkRadio (now renamed as SoloSmarts, since the kids have grown), a podcasting venue with inteviews, ideas and inspiration for work-at-home parents and solopreneurs.

She is also the driving force behind SoloMasterMinds, a membership site with tons of learning resources (audio, video, printable guides, etc) as well as a mentoring forum where mambers can ask questions, get feedback, find help, etc.

(Please, allow me to assure you that I am in no way affliated to Mrs McCaussey and that there are still persons in this world who would recommend somebody out of sheer belief in their merit.)

Cancer Research Saves Lives

My Personal Childhood Cancer Story

Be Brave, Get BaldHow difficult is it to imagine that the lively, rose-cheeked, smelling of fresh soap and smiling innocence child next door might not be there tomorrow?
I wish you never have to find out, neither for your kid or for the neighbour's.

I met Georgia while she was temporarily employed in our government offices, on the 5th floor of an old-fashioned, grayed building of the city centre. She was 35 or so, a fulsome, shining wife and mother, working to supplement her family's meager income and to help raise her beloved daughter.

I'd even seen Maria, her daughter, on a few occasions. She had taken after her mother - a solid little figure of nine, fair brown hair and a cherry smile for everyone. She had a gay disposition and a very good relationship with Georgia - she was one of those children who make you want to be a parent.

And then, one day, we saw Georgia without her usual bright smile. She came in wrecked, eyes swollen with tears, hands trembling from despair. Acute leukemia, doctors said, and we lost Maria a few weeks later. She would have been 25 today.

Getting Bald To Conquer Kids Cancer

St Baldrick's Shavees 2011

Kelly McCausey is not the only one who shaves her head to help raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. Men, women, school students, everybody can join - it really doesn't hurt! It's kind of shocking, though - but, then, so is childhood cancer.

What can a person say here?
I know nothing to ease anyone's anguish.
    Nothing to give them hope.
How can this happen to children?
