What Is Cancer?

The term cancer is used to define a disease that is characterized by the uncontroled growth of abnormal cells which are able to invade other tissues. Cancer can spread, a process called metastasis, to other cellular tissues via the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

There are more than 100 different types of cancer and so it isn't simply one disease but many.

Some types of cancer are named for the organ, while others are named for the type of cell in which they originate and still others are named for both. For example: Primary pancreatic cancer begins in the pancreas. Metastasis occurs when the primary pancreatic caner invades liver cells or other organs and then the term metastatic cancer applies. Small cell lung cancer, the most aggressive form of lung cancer, is named for the cell size and the organ in which it originates.

Cancer types can be grouped into broader categories. The main categories of cancer include:

Carcinoma - cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.
Sarcoma - cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue.
Leukemia - cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood.
Lymphoma and myeloma - cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.
Central nervous system cancers - cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.

All cancers begin in cells and our bodies are made up of many different kinds of cells. When cells grow and divide they do so in a controlled way to produce more cells in order to keep our bodies healthy. Cells do this because when they grow old or become dmaged they die and need to be replaced. It's an orderly process but sometimes this orderly process goes bad. The genetic material of a cell can change and produce mutations that then affect normal cell growth and division. Cells do not die when they should and new cells are created when the body does not need them. This of course defines uncontrolled growth and these new cells can form a mass of tissue called a tumor.
