Thank you for sharing your story. Cancer seems to run in our family, we lost my grandmother and aunt to cancer. My mother had a tumor and section of her colon removed almost 20 years ago, they told her it was precancerous. About a year and a half ago, she had a tumor and another section of her color removed and this time it was stage 2 cancer. She decided to not do any treatment despite her oncologists advice and is about 77. I don't blame her for not wanting to go through all that. I got myself checked and all is OK at this point. Thanks for sharing your story.
  • Susan52 Apr 25, 2012 @ 11:53 am | delete
Glad you got checked out, too. Hopefully your mom will continue to do well. My dad is now on at least a five-year follow-up schedule following his colon cancer surgery, from which he had a very long recovery. He's 82 and thriving now. and we are so very thankful. I hope you can report the same for your mom at age 82!

Thank you for sharing this story. I most say i have great respect for you that you still stand with both feet on the ground.

"You never thought it could happen to you or a loved one
But when it does everything changes
    Winter comes faster
    And summer fades away
    Oh, I hate cancer's pain."

Hi! I was wondering if you have tried and acid/alkaline diet. There is lots of information on how malignant cells can develop in an acidic environment.
  • Susan52 Sep 22, 2011 @ 4:56 pm | delete
I'm not at all strict about my diet, but I do know about the acid/alkaline evidence regarding cancer cells and try to maintain a reasonably healthy diet with acid/alkaline balance in mind. You can learn more about that diet and other ways to eat healthy to keep the cancer away in the Crazy, Sexy Diet book that I mentioned above. Thanks so much for mentioning it and for your visit and comment!

From my personal experience I believe that positive thinking is a major assistance in beating this disease. I hope I see a cure in my lifetime
  • Helenee Aug 1, 2011 @ 6:05 am | delete
Be strong and don't worry, God will help you through all difficult situations. Keep your spirits high, this is an essential element in keeping cancer away. Apart from diet and checking, of course!
  • dannystaple Jul 31, 2011 @ 10:05 am | delete
Glad to hear you got the all clear. Cancer is perhaps one of the most feared of all diseases right now - I've not personally had or been close to someone having cancer, but some family members have been. I can only hope medical science gets good at dealing with this.
  • CarlThomp May 23, 2011 @ 11:50 am | delete
This is an excellent life story which I enjoyed immensely I also shared my experience through my mother-in-law who recently lost the battle with colon cancer (http://www.squidoo.com/the-battle-with-cancer). However keep the good work up
  • Mike Tanski Apr 27, 2011 @ 2:37 pm | delete
Wow this story is so close to home! I had colon cancer, my father had colon and rectal cancer and his mother had colon cancer.
My dad's story was much the same as what I have just read here. Chemo, surgery, radiation, almost dying in the process. His doctor told me he would not survive but prayer and his stubborn Polish determination saw otherwise. Today he is gone, an aneurism killed him, suddenly. The cancer didn't. Against all odds. That man suffered, and even when he was cured he lived with a bag which really cramped his style, and on top of it he knew about the aneurism.
My story is actually mild by comparison. I had a highly selective vagotomy when I was 26, for a burst duodenal ulcer. This is an operation where they sever the nerves to the stomach to stop the production of acid so to let the ulcer heal, but what they don't tell you is that it leaves you with digestive complications, a loose gut being one of them. That had a role to play in the cancer episode.
In 1997 I had a job which demanded I travel a lot. I had perhaps more than my usual share of a runny stomach but I put that down to the hotel and airline food which was my staple diet at the time. Come December I was getting intermittent episodes of pain which again I blamed on the food. I took a break and one morning when I went to the loo had a catastrophic bleed. I phoned the specialist who was treating my wife's ulcerative colitis and told him what had happened. He saw me immediately and said it didn't sound good. Three days later I was introduced to my first colonoscopy and they found a tumour the size of a grape at the first bend in the colon. They removed it there and then, cutting it's stalk which attached it to the colon wall. It was called a polypoid carcinoma. I woke up and went home, with a deep seated feeling that something had been very wrong.
Monday saw me in the specialist's office. He showed me the photos and explained what had gone on. Apparently the cancer ended one millimeter in the stalk from where he had cut, ie he had cut healthy flesh. Here's the scary bit: According to him if I had left this thing just two weeks longer it would have spread into the colon wall and all the major organs and my chances of living beyond six months hence would have been slim. That rocked my world a tad.
I had to have extensive tests to check for spread to other organs anyway, and had to take a whole lot of different pills, a handfull each day, the actual composition of which I was not sure of, but six months later I was pronounced clear. By then I was on colonoscopy number two, and was having them every six months. By now I am on more than ten, closer to twenty, I have actually lost count, I hate the damn things but having them sure beats dying! Its not so much the colonoscopy that is unpleasant, its the preparation!
Well, along the way they have found more polyps and pulled them out, but I am not afraid. I know that as long as I have my checks done regularly I am safe. I had an amazingly close shave, my specialist still remarks today how lucky I was.
But I also know beyond any doubt that my Lord was looking after me then and is still doing so now. I was spared death for a reason.
Some of my friends hail me as a hero for surviving cancer but I disagree. It was not in my hands. I had it easy. But I did discover one thing. I made a sales call on a woman oneday that answered the door distraught. Her husband had just been diagnosed. We forgot the reason I was there, I spent a couple of hours telling her my and my dad's story and when I left she told me I had given her hope, which she had none of when I arrived. That made me see things in a new light. What a feeling to know that one has the power to give such a gift to someone.
Cancer does not have to kill. If the signs are heeded early, and action taken, it is not a fatal disease. My dad proved that.
God Bless all of you that have read this. Life is great! Life is a gift from a great God!

My mom died of cancer several years ago after being ill for about 6 months, but she was 90 and it didn't really hit home until we lost a dear family member to lymphoma this spring after a 15 year long battle. She was 42 years old. You have my admiration and gratitude for this lens and best wishes for the future. I appreciate your strength, endurance, and willingness to share and help others. Bless you.

Read through the anal cancer section then feel free to ask any question you have, no matter how odd, strange, or personal. Not only will they help, they'll make you LAUGH when you think you might not want to laugh. I can't tell you how much support that forum was for me. Blessings to you. Susan, I came back and re-read your lens and I am so happy to hear that things are going well with your family in your cancer battles. I got some good news yesterday. My thyroid biopsies showed the lumps were benign, so all I have to deal with now is liver surgery and chemo for the colon cancer. Making progress and intend to kick this cancer's butt. I wasn't aware of your diagnosis until now. I'm so happy to hear that your treatments went well and things are looking much better! It was educational to read about the symptoms of anal cancer, it's not something I know much about. We all tend to put off Dr. visits...even when we have insurance. Thank you for being so brave and for sharing your story to help others.

Grandmother and aunt had breast cancer, both survived it. Grandfather had throat cancer, he died. Mum had colon cancer, she survived. Best friend had cancer, she died, after a brave fight and traveling the country from East to West looking for a treatment.Even left the country to look or help. I don't think there is anyone who hasn't been touched by cancer in one way or another. It's about time they found a cure for the scourge on mankind. My goodness think of all the money that has been given over the years. May God Bless and Keep You in this your time of need.

Susan, thanks for sharing your story. I was unaware of your fight all this time until your good news hit today. For sure I'll keep you in my prayers. I am surrounded by cancer. Both my parents died of it, though Mom was 89 when she got it. One of my close friends is fighting valiently against colon cancer, and we are attending a memorial service in a few days for an old friend's wife who just died of breast cancer. My mother's sister also died of cancer. So far, all I've had is skin cancer, but I'm watchful and have had two colonoscopies ten years apart just to be on the safe side. They say there's no cancer there, but the symptoms that send me it still persist. They say it's IBS. I am glad you are winning your fight and hope your enemy will leave you alone from now on. I admire your courage and am glad you have your faith to lean on. You have been fighting a hard fight.

I'll be praying for you! Any struggles in life can be so difficult, and cancer affects sooo many people. Thank you for educating us.

Hello Susan...just checking in on you...I just finished #4...2 more to go...should be done mid Jan. How are you feeling?...I read you've lost your hair...no worries...it will grow back...mine is actually making an attempt to grow back during chemo...I look like a molting bald baby eagle ;o)

Let me know if you want some chemo hats...I bought a ton and hardly wear any of them.

Hang in there, I will check in with you again soon.
    Huge cyber hugs,

I wish you all the best and I am sure that you will be wearing the 'survivor' shirt very soon! In hypnotherapy we refer to 'disorder' as the problem (whatever it is we are facing) as opposed to a well person being ordered and healthy.
Take a deep breath and look in a mirror, picture the healthy 'you' in the reflection, imagine it so vividly and with your faith and belief it will happen.
Finally, congratulations on your nomination. xx

(((Susan))) I had no idea you were going through all this until tonight when I clicked on "Cancer Warrior" from the Squidoo front page. You are taking this so well, and I admire you so much for speaking out about it. My grandfather had colon cancer so I started having colonoscopys seven years ago when I was fifty. It was a relief to know that regular colonoscopies minimize the liklihood of getting this kind of cancer. Good thing you got yours when you did!

Immediately Start Using Reishi, Maitake & Agaricus Mushrooms Immediately, Start drinking Pure 100% Aloe Vera Daily with 25 Grams of Ground Flax Fiber Daily! NO MATTER WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SAYS!

Is it ANY Surprise Doctors have some of THE lowest Life Expectancy of ANY Profession!

BE Your OWN Doctor! Do your Own Research! Don't Just TRUST, THINK!

These are in fact the most proven substances on the planet for eliminating cancer from the body. They have a far higher success rate than any conventional treatment.

Research Dr. Richard Schulze who healed those from near death whom the modern medical system turned away!

Start thinking for yourselves and don't mindlessly accept what doctors and the modern medical system tells you as truth!

You can't HEAL your body by putting TOXINS IN like drugs and chemo! This is PROVEN TRUTH!

The average Cancer "Success" Rate using conventional treatments is 3% over 5 years. That's only remission! NOT CURED!

NATURAL HERBAL THERAPY IS THE #1 TREATMENT FOR ALL DISEASE!

The Modern Medical System Will NEVER let this fact be known!

WHY? They will LOSE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, The Drug Industry Would COLLAPSE. The ENTIRE Medical System would be turned upside down!

Susan, I absolutely love your lens. I know from experience that it takes a special kind of courage to deal with cancer when the diagnosis is thrust upon you. That's one package for which I wanted to refuse delivery. But there it was. And you learn real quick that you're going to give up or fight. I wanted to give up at first because I was centered on myself. Then I gradually realized that this cancer was affecting the people around me on a whole different and more powerful level.

It was those people around me that made me realize I needed to find the fight within me and go to war against this thing that had invaded my body. I also realized my absolute need for God. I was a Christian, but I was a "by the book" Christian. There was no relationship there with my Father. I quickly realized I needed that deeper, closer relationship.

I don't want to bore everyone with my story, but suffice it to say that I survive even to this day - God gave me 17 years so far, and hopefully more to come if He wills it. You are providing hope and a forum in which people can share and relate - thanks for that. My prayer for you is that God will continue to work in you and reach out through you to others in need.

    Love wins,
    M. Kayo

A great lens about a subject many people avoid talking about- yet, it's by talking about it that some of the fear can reduced. Getting an early diagnosis and keeping positive and as healthy as possible definately help. Thankyou for this lens.

Susan, my maternal grandfather had stomach cancer, if memory serves me correctly...but it did spread throughout his body. It wasn't easy to witness....

I admire your courage in writing about your struggles and ordeals and, to be honest, your faith shines through in your writing because there isn't one place where I sense you feeling sorry for yourself...

I published another lens tonight and thought of you as I was writing it. In fact, I thought of sick people, people who have lost loved ones, families which have broken-up, and homeless people. I wanted to write about the Emotional Aspects of Christmas because, too often, people focus on gifts and having fun without thinking about the other emotions the season brings forth. It truly opened my eyes in a way I could never have imagined...

    Hi Susan,
So sorry to read about your health challenge.
You will find help at the link above. I'm not messing you about -- this is serious information.
"Alternative" health practitioners know lots about cancer that oncologists in allopathic medicine deny all knowledge of.
Cancer cells can only exist in an acidic body which is in a fermentation state, they cannot live in a body whose internal environment is alkaline and OXYGENATED.
Read the Active8 programme on Chris Woollams' site, and follow his advice. You will be surprised.
Cancer is a metabolic disorder due to lifesyle, lack of nutrition and toxic overload.
If you want to talk, email me.
    Best regards, June.

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences with us about your brave fight with this monster. There are so many people in the world who are suffering quietly from Cancer. I had an experience in the family as well. My father was diagnised with Prostate cancer in June 2007. He suffered so badly that we thought we were going to lose him. My father is in Africa and I am living in the UK. From another friend in USA, I got some information about a product called 4Life Transfer Factor Malepro. I bought this product. I sent 2 bottles of the product and he used it for 3 months. You know things are hard in some parts of Africa. Just before the end of the 3 months he was taken to hospital for final checks before the operation and the doctor was shocked. The cancer had gone. During the time he was using the medicine he did not get any other treatment. Transfer Factor kills 97% of cancer cells in the body and so with 3% left one can lead a normal healthy life. Ohh Susan, this makes me very sad. I'm glad I'm in RMs now or who knows how long before I would have found out. I'm doing a Beth Moore Bible study in the book of Esther. One of the lessons was on fear. I'm sure for many of us "the big C" is a big fear and worst case senario for many of us. The point of the lesson was not that God would keep us from our worst fear, but that He'd be with us through it. I'll be praying for you my Squidoo mentor. Now I have a reason to pay attn. to twitter so I can get your updates and pray effectively. May God be you and your families strength and comfort in this difficult trial, may He give the Dr. and medical state wisdom and accuracy in treating you, I pray also for your healing and for God to be glorified through this.

    Susan,

I am praying for your full recovery as well as your brothers. I know prayer works, because the prayers that were sent to me and my husband Donald who was diagnosed with Colon Cancer and underwent 2 surgeries over the summer, I`m sure helped us get through this awful time. He has fully recovered from his ordeal and Our Prayers are with you and your brother for your recoveries as well.

Susan, What a difficult diagnosis and treatment you are facing. Our family has had bouts with cancer that have all been treated with long term results. I will pray for you to keep your eyes and heart fixed upon the One who loves you with an everlasting love.

Dear friend and my inspiration to press on with Squidoo, how happy I am to have "just decided" to stop by and visit your profile today and find this so I can pray to our wonderul Lord that we both share a relationship with on your behalf. We have so much in common, I am oldest of 4 too, girl boy girl boy, I am 57, I did have a colonoscopy 3 years ago and large non-cancerous polyp removed from my colon...and have a letter, another letter, and another reminding me I'm to come for another. Avoiding it...but maybe I should. But enough about me, praying for you, Squidoo sister, and your family. Thanks for your honest sharing. Hugs ~claudia

Thank you for sharing your story and I hope doing so helps you to deal with your journey. I am so sorry you are going through this and I will be praying for you. I lost my grandpa to cancer over two years ago and my step dad is battling cancer now. He has the exact diagnosis you have. His is in the lymph nodes and recently they found a spot in his lung. He's been battling cancer over a year now and is currently doing another round of Chemo. He's had a colostomy done and a couple of additional surgeries. Some days are better than others, but we've all learned to take one day at a time and be thankful for good days. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
    ***Blessed By A Squid Angel***
Praying for a real angel to watch over you.

Thanks for this. My son is a brain cancer survivor and nine years out it still occupies my mind every day, especially as he's really struggling to make it through college. I do have one comment about the "other side" of being a cancer warrior which is - that very sadly, people whose cancer THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN does not recede feel guilty or inadequate because they themselves think - or other people tell them - that if they have the "right attitude" and a "fighting spirit" they can beat it. There are so so many factors involved in the course of cancer and its treatment. It's so unfair for people to feel guilty if they are not "beating" the cancer. My two cents. Best of luck to you and your family! We're all on that narrow neck of land 'twixt two unbounded seas, you know.

Sending prayers and angels and visualizing you totally and completely victorious! I appreciate your sharing your story! I keep repeating this, but it is so true - when we tell our stories, we make a difference for somebody somewhere. We may never know the ones we have helped, but I firmly believe we are making a difference around the world. SquidAngel blessings!
