What do you do after cancer?

I can remember the day like it was yesterday. Almost ten years ago now, I took my oldest son to a routine check up with his pediatrician. I never imagined that my life would never be the same afterwards.

Medulloblastoma?????

What is that?

I was told after hours of MRI's, CT scans, and X-Rays that my little baby had a brain tumor about the size of a golf ball!! He had Medulloblastoma!! This is a word I will never forget in my life! Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain children of children ages 3-8 years old. It accountd for 15-20% of brain tumors in children!

What comes next.......

I feel that the best way to help your child get through this terrible ordeal is to be open and supportive about everything. My son was comforted by all of the explanations. I would let him know what test were going to be done and why...what the medicines were that he was given.... I know that he was to young to actually know what they were but it made him feel better and that was the most important thing at the time!

Remember, they are still children!!

Sometimes you can lose view of the fact that they are still children and just because they have cancer does not mean they are made from glass!! Yes, activities might have to be altered some now but making them feel as normal as possible is sooo important, especially now! They need to be able to play with other kids, laugh, draw, and just interact with others their age. They need to be told that you love them and hug them as much as possible! These children are going through a terrible ordeal but this should not be the focus...remember, these children have cancer, cancer does not have them!!

Childhood cancer is more common than you may think!
