National Cancer Survivors Day

This lens is about National Cancer Survivors Day®, an annual, worldwide Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries.

Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.

In most areas, National Cancer Survivors Day is traditionally observed on the first Sunday in June, although this is not always possible due to scheduling conflicts and time differences. Celebrating its 19th year in 2006, NCSD is the world's largest and fastest-growing annual cancer survivor event.

Who is a Cancer Survivor?

From Andrew Weil, M.D.

...conventional medicine identifies survivors as those who are in long-term recovery when, in fact, from the moment of diagnosis, everyone touched by cancer is in survival mode. This is true not only of patients, but also their caregivers, family members, and loved ones.

Survival begins as new cancer patients first confront the suspicion of the disease, and continues as they undergo the testing, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Their emotions can vary from fear to loneliness. There often is a sense of approaching mortality, and feelings that they've lost control over their lives, as well as confusion in interpreting medical information.

...therapies to complement your cancer treatment, you have wide choices.

* Meditation and Mind-Body Medicine: Explore mind-body techniques such as guided imagery, meditation, and energy medicine modalities such as Therapeutic Touch and Reiki.
* Stay Active: Regular exercise is an essential part of maintaining good health. Engage in gentle exercise (yoga is a good choice) as often as you can.
* Nutrition: Eat lots of fresh (organic, if possible) fruits and vegetables (consider juicing to increase serving size without feeling too full); drink several cups of green tea daily (for its cancer protective and antioxidant effects); and eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (walnuts, ground flaxseeds and cold-water fish such as wild Alaskan salmon and sardines). Always discuss changes in your diet with your physician.
* Seek Support: Join a support program for people with cancer. The inspiration and hope you'll find there is priceless.
* Have Faith: Don't underestimate the role of your spiritual being in the healing process.

You might also check into retreat centers for those living with cancer. Two that I recommend are Commonweal in Bolinas, Calif., which offers week-long cancer help programs, and the Sunstone Cancer Support Centers on the outskirts of Tucson, Ariz., which offers three- to five-day intensive healing retreats designed for adult survivors and their partners, caregivers, healthcare professionals, children and teens. (Some of the fellows at the University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine serve on Sunstone's faculty; see their Web site at www.sunstonehealing.org for more information.)

I wish you the best, and encourage you to share your convictions with fellow survivors. Passion can be contagious and therapeutic!

Chinese Medicine & Cancer

Diet Treatment For Cancer:
Limit diet to quality, not quantity. Cancer cells will absorb the nutrition from food so a small diet of anti-cancer foods would be beneficial. The cancer cells reproduce faster than normal cells and they will die faster as well. A diet bringing in the minimal amount of calories to maintain the bodies metabolism is optimal.
-do not eat sugar
-become vegetarian (fish is the least harmful, make transition slowly)
-eat good quality protein - tofu, beans, eggs, nuts, mushrooms
-do not eat cold or bitter foods
-do not eat foods which create damp cold or damp heat

Other Areas For Treating Cancer:
Meditation: Imagine that the cancer is dissipating and dying. Imagine that you are surrounded by a white light which fights the cancer within.
Yoga
T'ai Chi
Qi Gong

Etheridge appeals for alternative to chemo

Breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge was left traumatised by the experience of undergoing chemotherapy, and has called on scientists to develop a kinder treatment.

The Bring Me Some Water singer, 44, is now cancer-free after 10 months battling the disease - but pities other sufferers who have to undergo the treatment.

Etheridge says: "The chemotherapy is the biggest trip. The medical community has to come up with something better. It hasn't changed in 30 years. It has got to change."

Frank appeared on E.T. on February 10 to talk about his surgery and to urge men to have frequent prostate check-ups. There is a video clip of Frank's E.T. appearance here. We are extremely grateful for his early diagnosis and treatment and wish Frank a very speedy recovery.
