Old Fashioned Toffee Apples become Gourmet Candied Apples

Sweet Childhood Memories of Toffee Apples
We didn't particularly care what day it was. We only cared about those yummy apples on sticks coated with gooey red toffee.
These days, the red toffee apple has been replaced with candied apples and often these are dipped in caramel or chocolate with fancy toppings like crushed peanuts, chocolate chips and sprinkles.
Some days I pine for an old-fashioned toffee apple, the same as I had in childhood. So I make some! You can too, in less than half an hour.
Traditional Toffee Apples
Like my Grandmother used to make

Traditional Toffee Apples Recipe

- Serves: Makes 8 Apples
- Prep Time: 5
- Total Time: 30
Ingredients
- 8 small Golden Delicious
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon red food colouring - optional
Instructions
First, cover a baking tray with a large sheet of greaseproof paper. Wash and dry your apples and insert skewers into each one
Combine the water, sugar and vinegar in a small heavy based pan.
Bring to the boil and add the food colouring
Simmer for about 20 minutes. Test after 20 minutes by dropping a spoonful of toffee into a cup of cold water. The mixture should become hard and will crack when you tap it with the back of a metal spoon.
Remove from heat and dip the apples in one at a time
Place on the greaseproof paper to cool down and harden.
Warning!
The toffee mixture gets dangerously hot so don't lick the spoon!
Bamboo Skewers

Amazon Price: $0.10 (as of 02/17/2012)![]()
I try to keep a stock of bamboo skewers in a bottom drawer. Great for grilled chicken, barbecues, any food that needs to be secured and the occasional treat like toffee apples
Coating The Apples Correctly
Careful, it's hot!
Dip your apples, holding the wooden stick, and submerge completely in the toffee.Tilt the pot as necessary and spoon the mixture over the apples for a full coating.
If you're using additional toppings, dip the apples in them before the toffee shell hardens.
Make sure to eat them within three days!
Get Creative
Take Toppings for a Walk on the Wild Side
Now it's time to get creative.Using the classic recipe if fine, but I like to change things up a little.
Dipping your apples in a melted caramel is the perfect base for a great candied apple. Before it hardens, roll it in any topping you choose.
Crushed nuts, sprinkles, and mini chocolate chips are great choices.
