Candy Cane Stripes!

Candy Cane Stripes Everywhere I Turn!

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is the candy cane! The stripes of color just liven up the dark winter months. I am addicted to candy cane stripes in all the shapes and sizes they come in!
Usually a candy cane is a simple white stick with diagonal red lines, but candy canes can come in a variety of different colors. Around Christmas you can find candy canes made of green with red stripes circling around them. Last week I saw a candy cane that was blue with purple stripes! The most colorful of all have to be the rainbow candy canes!

Candy canes have so many uses in their original candy form. Of course you can eat them. Everyone does. but the clever cane shape lends itself to hanging, and adorning Christmas trees.

The familiar candy cane stripes have moved off of candy and on to everything else! I have seen candy cane stripyness on everything from Christmas ornaments to soap! You see candy cane striped socks in every clothing store. So many places have candy canes perch in cups on desks around the Christmas season, but beware these might have caps and not be edible!

White Candy Cane?

Did you know that the candy cane was originally solid white? These solid white candy canes are credited with appearing in Americana history around 1847, when August Imgard was seen to decorate his Ohio Christmas tree with these bent sugar sticks.

Stripes were not to be seen on these candies for another fifty years or so. In the early 1900's Christmas cards started showing the bent sugar sticks with swirling stripes of red and green. It seems that the familiar peppermint and wintergreen flavorings were added to the candy cane.

Candy Cane Straight Talk

How did the candy cane become bent?

Did you know that candy canes not only started out as a plain white treat, but also as just a straight stick?!

When this sweet treat was originally made, it was as a straight stick of white sweetness. Whether truth or legend, the most commonly told story of how these straight candy sticks became crooked is this....

Around 1640, the choirmaster of the Cologne Cathedral in France is credited with bending the traditional straight candy stick.
Shaping the plain white stick into a resemblance of a shepard's staff, he handed them out to children in his care during the long church services of the Christmas season.

Another less told theory is that the straight candy stick gained its' curve as a convenient way to hang it upon the branches of the Christmas tree for decoration. I know that I hang candy canes on my Christmas tree every year!

A lot of these unusual color combinations even have different flavoring added to them. Sometimes it even seems that the traditional candy cane has been taken over by rainbows!
