All Things Candy Corn

candy corn crafts, recipes, decorations, and more!

Candy corn is the sweet equivalent of Marmite- either you love or hate this autumn-hued, buttery tasting candy.

Regardless of how you feel about the flavor, it's undeniable that candy corn is the iconic candy of Halloween. I admit- I love candy corn mostly for it's looks rather than it's taste. There's just something about that signature orange, yellow and white that is absolutely perfect for Halloween decorating and crafts.

In this lens I'll tell you more about the candy itself and share some fantastic candy corn ideas to make your holiday extra-special.

The History of Candy Corn

a little education before you dig in

While the first candy corn maker is unknown, the first people to commercially produce it was the Wunderlee Candy Company of Philidelphia in the 1880's. The candies were handmade in small batches by tiny groups of workers who tediously layered colored candy in triangular molds. The tri-color design was considered revolutionary in it's time, which brought candy corn into high demand. Since the candy was handmade, it was only sold March through November.

However, the best known producer of candy corn, the Goelitz candy company, didn't start making the confection until 1900.

Now that the candy making process is highly automated, candy corn is sold year-round and sells 8.3 billion kernels per year, most of which are consumed during the months of October and November.

Candy Corn Scarf

Simple and quick for beginning knitters

This is a simple scarf that will take only about a week for beginners and 2-3 days for more experienced knitters. The length of the scarf depends on how long you want to make it, but I recommend making the scarf as long as you are. For example, I'm 65" tall, so my scarves are 65" long. This makes a nice, long scarf for everyday wear.

What you'll need
100 yards each of yellow, white and orange yarn
Regular straight needles that match your yarn size

Instructions
Cast on 20 stitches with yellow yarn and knit until the piece is 6" long. At this point, count the rows and write that number down. This way, you'll always have the exact same size patches.
Switch to the orange yarn and again knit the same number of rows that you did with the yellow yarn. This should bring the piece to 12". Again, add white yarn and knit 6 inches.
Repeat this process until the scarf reaches a desired length, then cast off.

If you want to make your scarf even cuter, use the remaining yarn to create a 6" long fringe (twelve inch long pieces folded and attached to scarf) and slide orange, yellow, and white beads onto the fringe. Secure the beads by tying two knots underneath the bottom beads.

Candy Corn Fingernails

warning: may encourage thumb sucking or nail biting

My very poor nail art skills.Alright. I got the candy corn colors wrong and started with orange instead of yellow. You thought I was an expert, didn't you?

If you want to do the design correctly, it goes like this: A stripe of yellow, a stripe of orange, and a stripe of white on the tip of the nail. Finish it off with some top coat to keep the design shiny and fresh. Rest assured that your nail art probably looks far better than my sloppy job as pictured. Well, I can say one good thing about my nail "art"- that fluffy white polish sure looks like marshmallow creme.

Decorative Candy Corn Tree

All you need for this lovely centerpiece is a vase, a small branch with twigs from outside, and some candy corn.

Place the branch in the jar and surround with candy corn before affixing the remaining corn to the tree with glue, or if you're lazy you may use tape.

It doesn't work to push the candy onto the branches. You'll end up with broken candy corn and broken twigs.
