History of mellowcreme candy pumpkins
Candy pumpkins are made by the same process that results in candy corn. This process was developed in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Co. It involves combining honey, corn syrup, food colouring, and sugar to produce a syrup called mellowcreme. After colouring, the resulting syrup is formed into small pumpkin-shaped candies. These candies are said to taste like marshmallow, hence the "mellowcreme" label.
The most popular candy pumpkins are produced by Brach's, but there are off-brands available in certain locations as well. These popular Halloween treats are only available during the Halloween season to fill trick or treat bags as well as their common usage as cupcake nonpareils.
