The Pancreas...
Why so important?
To understand canine pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis, you first have to understand the importance of the pancreas. The pancreas is a very important organ that is vital to the body...your's and your dogs! It helps in the digestion process, producing the enzymes that breakdown the protein, carbohydrates and fat that both of you need to survive. The pancreas is also the only place in the body that produces the all important hormone insulin. Why is insulin so important?
When you or your dog eats too much fatty foods or sugar, your pancreas produces insulin to level out the sugar in your blood. It sends out signals to your body to convert the sugar, or glucose, into glycogen. This glycogen is then stored in your liver and muscles. During all of this, the insulin stops your body from using fat as an energy source. People (or dogs...) develop diabetes because their body can no longer produce insulin. That is when it is necessary to inject insulin.

Different Types...
Canine pancreatic cancer has two forms. Both of them can result from an inflammation of the pancreas.
1. Acute Pancreatitis - This type of pancreatitis can come on suddenly without warning. Acute pancreatitis can also linger around even after your dog has seemed to recover from it. This type of pancreatitis has a high mortality rate, even among us humans.
2. Chronic Pancreatitis - This is pancreatitis whose symptoms occur over a long period of time. Eventually these symptoms can worsen even more over time.
As you can see, both types of pancreatitis can cause severe pain for your dog. Canine pancreatic cancer is most common in older dogs. Those dogs that have been pampered over a long period of time and fed a diet high in fat and too much junk food. Diabetes is a common side effect of pancreatitis because of the pancreas' inability to do it's job.( which is monitor sugar levels in the blood.) In many cases, an insulin treatment is used to combat the diabetes.
In some cases inflammation of the pancreas can lead to the pancreatic fluids leaking into the stomach. Resulting in that fluid trying to digest other organs in the body. This will result in permanent damage to the surrounding organs like the liver and gall bladder.

Causes...
I touched on the number one cause in the above paragraph, but here it is again if you missed it.1. High fat diet - Feeding your dogs a diet high in fat is not good. When you do this your dog's body cannot handle it and over time it can result in steatorrhea. Steatorrhea is the presence of excess fat in feces. This can result because of a defect in the pancreas or liver disease, (which is responsible for dispensing bile.) Bile aids in the digestion of foods.
2. Too much junk food - As I said before, in the beginning your dog's body may be able to handle a high fat diet and a lot of junk food, and I understand that you will want to pamper and reward your best friend from time to time. But just like your body, eventually it will be too much for him/her to handle. Over time the pancreas will not be able to keep up with the demand for more and more insulin being distributed throughout the bloodstream, and it will fail.
3. Processed Dog Food - It has been known for years that processed food is not good for you. So you know that processed dog food is not good for your dog either! If you have been paying attention to any of the recent health news of the last 5 years then you know this fact! Processed dog food is full of things that your dog would NOT eat in the wild! And over time, it has become the leading cause of 90% of cancers in dogs!
You have to look at your dog's diet like you would your own. You know that you cannot continue to eat a high fat diet, full of sweets and junk food. Neither can your dog! I know that having a fat, overweight dog might seem kind of cute, but you are doing your dog a BIG disservice! If you continue on this path, eventually you will have a very sick dog on your hands. And that's the last thing that we want, right?
There are ways to help your dog if he has cancer AND keep your dog from getting cancer altogether. It has long been known that a RAW MEAT DIET is a diet that can and will help your dog fight off the effects of cancer, and get his/her body back to where it belongs. Think about it, your dogs closest relative in the wild is the wolf. Have you ever heard of any wolf catching cancer? Do you see any wolf eating processed food?
The answer to that is no and NO! The dog food industry is a billion dollar industry! And nowhere else on the planet has a problem with canine cancer but those places that feed their dogs processed food! Your dog is supposed to eat a diet that is comparable to what he will have eaten in the wild! All of this processed food is killing him! When you change to a raw meat diet, you will see an IMMEDIATE change in his overall appearance, attitude and his health!
