What is a canker sore?

Canker sores are painful and most often occur as small red lesions of the soft tissues of the mouth. The soft tissues include the inside of the lips, the gums, and underneath the tongue. The location, as well as their appearance, can differentiate the lesions from cold sores, or fever blisters, which are usually scabby or crusty and occur on the outer lip. These types of sores are caused by a virus and require a different course of action.

Differentiate between canker sores and fever blisters!

  • Canker sore - a sore in the mouth or on the inner lip caused by a reaction or irritation, non-contagious
  • Fever blister - sore on or around the mouth/lips caused by a herpes virus, contagious

I don't get canker sores anymore but did when I was growing up and Mom would always reach for the alum and that would take care of it, man they can be so uncomfortable. I didn't know about the possible causes, so this was interesting for me.

I had no idea toothpaste was involved. I have been getting them since childhood (thanks mum!) but usually only once or twice a year at the change of season. Abreva is a good friend to have.

Up until abut 1979 I had horrible caner sores all the time, huge ones even. Then an article came out in Parade magazine about taking lysine for them. Ever since then, if I feel one coming on, I load up on lysine, and never get the sore. This helped my whole family as we all used to suffer from them. Not 30 years now!
