Motivation
Back in November 2005 I bought a Canon 20D body and two lenses (an EF 24-70 mm f/2.8L USM and an EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens). I was extremely pleased with the camera and both lenses, and I started the Canon 20D lens.
After one year with the Canon 20D I moved up to the Canon 5D (full frame) but kept using the 20D--mostly for sports photography. Now I am replacing my 20D with the new Canon 40D.
The 30D is an improvement over the 20D, though it misses several nice features of the 40D: Digic III processor, self-cleaning sensor, liveview, 10 megapixels. However, the price of the 30D is coming down fast and you may want to save some money on the body, buy a 30D, and use the remaining $ to buy a better lens. The lens is much more important than the body!
Quick tips
- Since the 20D, 30D, 40D, and 5D all use the same battery, you can buy a couple of these cameras (for example, the combination 5D + 30D) and just buy one spare battery that can fit either camera.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Great lens for everyday situations.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Quite expensive, but beautiful lens! I can take sharp handheld photos at 200mm, or even 400mm with the extender below.
Canon EF 2X II Extender Telephoto Accessory
The extender will bring you down two stops (for example, from 2.8 in the above lenses to 5.6) but I have found the extender very worthwhile taking sports shots under well-lit conditions. The extender effectively transforms the 200mm lens into a 640mm equivalent of a 35mm camera.
Canon Speedlite 580EX Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series, and EOS SLR Digital Cameras
I've had a great experience with this flash the few times I have used it (I work with natural light much more often).
