Most reviewers liked that this is a good camera for the enthusiastic amateur photographer. One reviewer noted that it is a medium sized camera that makes the Olympus E-510 look like a wimp, but isn't an overly bulky camera. Another noted that it probably wouldn't beat out full-frame cameras, but came close enough for a possible "big brother" to be a contender. Most liked its build and, while no one suggested deliberately abusing it, one reviewer called it the "tank" of the camera world. People liked the viewfinder's excellent coverage with good brightness and size.

Some gripes included a tendency to over-expose and mess up colors in especially bright conditions. The IR remote shutter release appears to be useless in situations where you might want to take pictures of wildlife and other remote subjects. One person suggested using the -2/3rds EV as a standard setting with Highlight Tone Priority enabled and contrast at the default (zero) point as a solution to the problems it has shooting in direct sun. Some may find it preferable to avoid shooting in direct sun altogether. Another reviewer disliked how it handled audio for the video and suggested that a digital video camera might be a good investment if you're a video enthusiast.
