Canon MX870 Printer Review

Ranked #19,963 in Computers & Electronics, #393,489 overall

A Quality All-in-One Printer a Great Price

The Canon MX870 printer is a high quality device, with a sleek design. The "gun metal" color sure makes for a unique look!

It sells at a great price, and has all the functionality that you will expect from an all-in-one printer, including fax.

It features easy setup and unparalleled Canon quality, so you can be sure your money is being well-spent. Read on for an overview of features as well as its pros and cons. Happy shopping!

Everyday Printing

The dual paper paths lets you keep the machine loaded for everyday printing and still allows you to print off digital pictures without swapping in the picture paper.

You will love the ability to put the camera's memory card directly into the printer, rather than having to deal with a piece of software on the computer.

Photo Printing and Ink Cost

The photo quality is excellent; it prints vivid, brilliant photos. And you will be pleased by how long the ink will last. Replacement cartridges are reasonably priced; the black ink is pretty inexpensive at $11, while the whole set of five color tanks sells for around $40. You can get cheaper non OEM ink, but given how long the ink has lasted, you might want to go for original Canon cartridges once it's time to replace.

It uses a five individual ink tank system which definitely saves money in the long run, especially now that everyone has been using the digital camera more and more. A clear advantage to the two cartridge system.

Scanning and Copying

Scanning works flawlessly. It scans really well from the automatic document feeder, and the two-sided scanning is a definite plus.

Copying documents is very easy and can be done from the front panel. You will like the fact that you'll be able to print single-sided documents into two-sided copies, it saves a great deal on paper.

Fax

The Canon MX870 printer has incoming and outgoing fax functionality, and using it is pretty straightforward. You do need to connect a regular telephone wire from the printer to a wall jack, as the fax still uses your land line. Setup is a breeze, though, and you'll be faxing in no time.

Wireless Connectivity

The last function I feel I need to point out is how seamlessly the wireless connectivity works. Being able to browse recipes on your laptop in the living room and have them print in the office will make things so much easier, especially if you used to just email yourself links you'd like to print out later when you actually sat down at the computer attached to the printer.

Pros: The Good

  • ink lasts a long time

  • prints brilliant, lab-quality photos

  • supports double-sided printing, copying and scanning

  • fax feature makes it perfect for the small office

  • prints photos wirelessly from the iPhone and iPod Touch

  • setting up wireless connectivity is extremely simple

Cons: And the Bad...

about the Canon MX870 printer

  • fax is not wireless, although I don't know of any printer that offers this feature

  • can be a bit slow, so consider other options if speed is critical to you

Summary

Verdict on the Canon MX870 printer

Overall, this is an excellent all-in-one printer. I imagine it could stand up to much heavier use than I put it through, so I could see it working in small offices as well. I couldn't be happier with this printer, and find myself using the additional functions more than I thought. No regrets on this purchase: impressive performance at the right price.
