My Canon T3

I Love My Canon T3!

I debated for a long time whether or not I should get an SLR camera. I really wanted one, but it took me a while to justify the cost. Once I decided to get one, there were so many options! Finally, I decided on a Canon EOS T3. Now, I want to share my decision-making process with you.

If you are looking for a dSLR camera that is easy to use but has all the functionality of a fancier one without the cost, this is the one for you! And if you want a dSLR this year, this review will be the one to help you choose!

This would be a great Christmas or birthday gift for any aspiring photographer!

The Camera

Canon EOS T3

This is my new camera. I bought it about two months before my birthday, after saving up for nearly a year. Finally the time was right! (Saving up for that long allowed me to buy it with cash instead of on credit as well as providing a long time for me to research and decide what I really wanted. No spontaneous purchase here! Plus, I bought it on Father's Day weekend, so I got a great deal.)

I have a fantastic point-and-shoot camera, but having more lenses offers more flexibility. This camera is 12.2 megapixels, which used to be a lot but is sort of middle of the road now. The highest I found was 18. I weighed the cost of the camera versus the 6 additional megapixels, and it wasn't enough for me to pay that amount. I'm not a professional photographer, and none of my photos will be printed bigger than 8x10, so this will be fine.

You can also pay more for a higher resolution of video. I don't use video very often, so that was not a priority for me. (The T3i has better video quality, if that is a priority for you. I rarely use video, so I didn't care.)

This camera is great for the price. It comes with lots of megapixels, the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, high (enough) resolution video, and all the features I could ever imagine or use. It is a great camera for families, photographing kids as well as weddings and other events, and anything else you would need. Yet it is inexpensive enough to be worth the purchase. The perfect middle ground, in my opinion.

This is a fantastic camera for anyone. The price is right for what you get, and it's a perfect first SLR for any aspiring photographer! I absolutely love mine!

Oh, the Places It Goes!

I take my T3 with me everywhere! (Almost.) I use it to shoot family functions, youth group activities, my brother's sports teams and games, days in the park with my dog, beautiful seasons at the farm, kids I babysit... And the list goes on!

Which Side Are You On?

And so continues the great camera debate. Which is your brand of choice?

Canon all the way!

veggiegardner says:

Canon - I thought long and hard about which to choose initially. No regrets, but I'm sure I would have said the same about Nikon.

EileenSmith says:

To be honest I'm only saying Canon because I have one and I've never had a Nikon, but I'm sure they're both excellent. Always found the debate fun at least.

JoyfulReviewer says:

Both are excellent brands. I'm more into finding the camera that provides the features I want, for an acceptable price.

Joie says:

I know they're both excellent cameras, but I've only ever owned a Canon.

Nikon, without a doubt!

naheedahsan says:

nikon is the best.....

daedrea says:

Nikon!! I barely know much about Canon except that it is a good brand, but I love the pictures that the Nikon can make. I especially love their digital cameras.

Titia says:

I choose the Nikon side because I have a Nikon D5000 and a Sony Cybershot 717 (with the movable lens) and up till now I haven't used the Nikon yet. In comparison to my Sony I find it too heavy to carry around and I miss the moving lens. I do have a small pentax too (more a point and shoot) and that's a good one too.

ErHawkns7100 says:

Nikon.

rauspitz says:

I'm a Nikon guy for life. Just think they take better pictures.

A Long Lens

A zoom lens is a must-have for any Canon T3 or dSLR owner!

For my birthday, I asked my dad for this lens. (I actually got it 6 weeks early!) After lots of research and using a few long lenses in the store, this is the one I chose. The length is much farther than the next one down. The only downside is that there is no image stabilization (IS). In bright sunlight or with a tripod, this is not a problem though.

This lens is 75-300mm in range, without IS. For a few hundred dollars more, you can get 50-250mm with IS. Again, it's about priorities. I almost exclusively shoot outside in daylight with this one, so the lack of IS has never been a problem for me. The tradeoff was the lower cost and longer range.

It was sort of a compromise lens for me. (A good compromise.) I didn't want to spend a ton of money, but I wanted a better zoom. There is nothing better for the price, though you do lose a few f-stops and the IS. Still, I'm glad I made the choice I did to get this lens.

If you're only going to have two lenses for your SLR, you want this one! I only had two for several months- the one it came with and this one- and I don't need another one by any means. Such a great lens! (Now, in addition, I have a 50 prime lens, which I love. See below.)

Why Canon?

Why did I choose a Canon dSLR instead of another brand?

There are hundreds of SLRs out there, made by dozens of brands. Why did I choose Canon?

It's simple. I like Canon.

I've had several Canon cameras, and they make sense to me. My aunt has a Nikon that I use off and on, and the menus aren't intuitive to me. I feel like it's sort of Macs versus PCs. Neither is necessarily better (although Macs are WAY better!), and they both have similar functions. It just matters what you're used to.

With big electronic purchases, I generally stick with brands I've heard of and/or used before. There are a lot of obscure brands out there, and their products may be fine, but I don't know that. I know Canon will take care of me. I know Nikon makes great cameras. Sony is a well-known brand. Pentax has been making cameras forever. These are brands I tend toward.

Honestly, I'm glad I went in to my camera purchase knowing I wanted a Canon. It took the amount of options from hundreds to about 18. Looking through hundreds would have been way too overwhelming. The parameter of "Canon" narrowed it down so I could make a decision.

dSLR Accessories

Extras that will make your Canon T3 even more wonderful!

Every person who gets a new camera needs some new accessories. These are all things that I own and got for my Canon T3.

I got the Case Logic sling bag so I could get my camera out without removing the bag. It holds my extra lenses, batteries, LensPEN, and a few other things, which is just what I need. It's also great for when I bike places and take my camera. I love it! Because I wanted to make sure and protect my camera, I actually got the case before my camera arrived. Regardless of what you choose, make sure and have a case of some sort to keep your camera safe!

The LensPEN is simple and easy to use, and an inexpensive way to keep your lens nice and clean.

I use my monopod mostly when taking pictures at my brother's sporting events. It helps me keep my camera steady but is way easier to move around with than a tripod.

Photo Examples

These are some photos I took with my Canon T3.

My Newest Lens

The Nifty Fifty

This is the lens that was on my Christmas list this year (and I got it!). It's a 50mm prime lens, meaning it has no zoom. It is said to be the closest lens to what humans see. The 1.8 f-stop makes it fantastic for depth of field. Now that I have it, I will be content with my three (the kit lens, my zoom, and this one) for a while.

This is a wonderful Canon dSLR prime lens. (A prime lens is one that does not zoom, but has other abilities.) Keep an eye out for a lens about it!
