I bought this camera from Amazon (great prices, free shipping and stellar reputation) after spending 10 hours of research on point and shoot cameras (I'm pretty thorough when I buy something) and I just love it.
I had it narrowed down to the SD1000 and the Canon SD850 and I went with the 850 because I didn't like the square look of the 1000 and I wanted image stabilization because of how highly rated this feature was for shooting in low light conditions.
While both cameras have the same basic functionality I thought the extra money for the 850IS was well worth it and I think the quality of the photos are slightly better.
I also looked at the SD750 because it has a bigger LCD screen but the lack of a viewfinder and some of the reviews I read kind of turned me off.
While the other camera manufacturers had some nice offerings I couldn't find any that beat the SD850 when comparing features and price so if you are looking for a great little point and shoot save yourself some time and check out the Canon SD850.
Update: The more I use this camera the more I love it. I take it everywhere and the battery life is exceptional and it is so easy to use.
Because it has a metal body I have no problem putting it into a jeans pocket. Try that with a plastic body camera!
I haven't tried very many of the advanced features but if you are into that kind of thing I don't think you will be disappointed at all.
