Can Cubs rise to the occasion?

Rising to the occasion

I am sure the Cubs have been wondering when the drought that is facing the World Series will come to an end. Cubs have gone for 102 years without winning any World Series and bringing home silverware. Worse still, they have been out of the World Series for 65 years. In 2003, they had displayed quality and were only fire outs to lift the World Series but only ended up to fall apart in what can be termed as epic fashion.

According to many analysts, they thought Cubs could recover in 2009 and go ahead to challenge the major forces in the World Series competition. They had made an appearance in two post season qualifiers and managed to become the central champions of the National League Division champions. Further to that, they had the much needed service of Milton Bradley who immediately earned his place in the starting line-up. Contrary to the expectations of many people, the problems of Cubs started with the non-performance of Bradley who never integrated well with the other players. The Cubs could not help but finish with just 83-78 points to show, missing the division championship by an aggregate of seven point five games.

The year 2010 is here with us and no one can convince the fans of this northern Chicago club that they will not perform well. Many are banking on players like Derek Lee who in the past season was faced with a devastating injury that left him out of action for 21 games of the whole season. His departure left the defense of Cubs struggling a lot since no replacement could match his ability. Lee has been termed as one of the best players that Cubs has ever had. He is perfect in both attack and defensive roles. During his short term play in the year 2009, he managed to hit thirty five home runs during a total of a hundred and eleven runs.

Another player who cannot go unmentioned for his exemplary display is Aramis Ramirez who was the third baseman. Since taking over from Ron Santo, he has proved to be quite consistent and he is also a perfect clean-up hitter.

Other surprises were Randy Wells, Carlos Zambrano, Tedd Lilly and of course Ryan Dempster. The four rookie pitchers are talented players and are showing great quality. They are going to be double-digit scores if they are to continue with that trend.
